4 | WHATS NEW
Whats New at the US Open
Strategic Transformation
The US Open has a long tradition of marrying history with
innovation, naming its facility for Billie Jean King and its showpiece
stadium for Arthur Ashe all while breaking new ground in tennis
with equal prize money, night tennis, blue courts and instant replay
The US Opens latest endeavor is its grandest yet: a sweeping
transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis
Center The first phase of the transformation was implemented for
the 2014 US Open—the new West Stadium Courts and Practice
Gallery—and work has continued into this year Headlining those
efforts is the roof that will cover Arthur Ashe Stadium The second
phase of construction on the roof began shortly after the 2014
US Open and continued over the winter and spring, with the roofs
support structure rounding into shape
The transformation will take place in stages, with completion slated
for 2018 Here is a full timeline of what to expect—and when to
expect it:
For 2015 US Open: All permanent steel for Arthur Ashe Stadium
erected and set along with the installation of four new video
boards, LED court lighting and a sound system
For 2016 US Open: Arthur Ashe Stadium roof complete and
operational; new Grandstand stadium debuts; 10 rebuilt field courts;
the south campus expanded to improve traffic flow on the grounds
The widened walkways will connect Court 17 to the new Grandstand
For 2018 US Open: New Louis Armstrong Stadium debuts
New Schedule for 2015
The US Open is returning to a traditional 14-day Grand Slam
schedule for 2015, with a more competitive, action-packed first
week, the womens semifinals on Thursday, the mens semifinals
on Friday and a true Finals Weekend that will crown the womens
singles champion on Saturday and the mens champion on Sunday
ESPN Assumes Full Broadcast Role
Watching the US Open will be easier than ever in 2015 ESPN
is taking over as the exclusive domestic broadcast partner of
Americas Grand Slam, covering the entire tournament on its family
of networks In this first full year of the US Opens partnership with
ESPN, fans will be able to follow the action on TV on ESPN and
ESPN2 and via daylong live streaming of all TV courts on ESPN3
and the Watch ESPN app
