Declaration of Faith
WE BELIEVE:
1. In the verbal inspiration of the Bible.
2. In one God eternally existing in three persons; the Father, Son, and Holy
Ghost.
3. That Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father conceived of the
Holy Ghost, and born of the Virgin Mary. That Jesus was crucified, buried and
raised from the dead; that He ascended to heaven and is today at the right hand
of the Father as the intercessor.
4. That all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and that
repentance is commanded of God for all and necessary for forgiveness of sins.
5. That justification, regeneration, and the new birth are wrought by faith in
the blood of Jesus Christ.
6. In sanctification subsequent to the new birth, through faith in the blood of
Christ; through the Word, and by the Holy Ghost.
7. Holiness to be God's standard of living for His people.
8. In the baptism of the Holy Ghost subsequent to a clean heart.
9. In speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, and that it is
the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
10. In water baptism by immersion, and all who repent should be baptized in
the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.
1 1. Divine healing is provided for all in the atonement.
12. In the Lord's Supper and washing of the saint's feet.
13. In the premillennial second coming of Jesus. First, to resurrect the
righteous dead and to catch away the living saints to Him in the air. Second, to
reign on the earth a thousand years.
14. In the bodily resurrection; eternal life for the righteous and eternal
punishment for the wicked.

DEDICATION
Eastern North Carolina Church of God is proud to dedicate this Centennial Book to our first State
Overseer, William Edward Smith.
His dedication to God, and sincere compassion has been the paramount quality that sets him apart as a
capable leader and what some would say, "a down to earth friend". His love and kindness is an evident
part of his christian character which attracts others to the knowledge of our Lord.
He was born on September 2, 1930 in Marengo County, Alabama to Freeman and Naomi Smith. He has
three brothers and two sisters, Robert, Allen, Trice, Miriam, and Sue. Edward Smith grew up in
Thomasville, Alabama, and attended schools and graduated in the same town.
One of the best things happened to him, was when he married Joanna Creel on October 27, 1950. They
later became happy parents of Janella, Stephen, Edward, and Randall Paul. These children are all now
married, and their son-in law's name is Phillip Allred, and daughter in Law's name are Debra, and Vickie.
The Smiths have six grandchildren, Amy, Chad, Jai, Brad, Bridgett and Tiffney.
Edward Smith was saved on November 16, 1945 and was a member of the Thomasville Church of God in
Alabama. He held several positions while a member of this church, as Sunday School Teacher, Youth
Leader and also District Youth Director.
After accepting the call to the ministry he was first licensed by the Church of God in February of 1 947 and
was ordained on January 13, 1956.
All of his pastorates have been in the State of Alabama and they were Branch & Copeland (2 churches
pastored at same time) Perdido, Atmore (where a new church was constructed), Sheffield, Enterprise,
Indian Springs-Mobile, South Park-Birmingham, and Anniston.
During these years he was the District Overseer of three districts and was on the Youth Board of Alabama
two times, and State Council four times. He also served as Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship in
Mobile Alabama and President of the Church of God Ministerial Fellowship in Birmingham and East
Central Alabama.
He has distinguished leadership as Evangelism and Home Mission Director of Alabama for four years,
and State Overseer of Kansas. Presently, he not only serves at the State Overseer of the Church of God in
Eastern North Carolina, but a committee member of the General Chaplaincy Commission Board.
He serves as Chairman of the Home for Children Board, and Co Chairman of the East Coast Bible College
Board of Directors in North Carolina.
It is with distinct honor and our privilege to dedicate this Centennial issue to a deserving leader,

The State of Eastern North Carolina has had a significant involvement in the Pentecostal movement and
Church of God organization since its inception in the Twentieth Century movement. Therefore, it
becomes important that data be researched and preserved as it relates to the Church of God.
The state Council of Eastern North Carolina commissioned the State Centennial Committee which
consists of the Reverend W. P. Pope, Jr., Millard Maynard, and L. L. Reeder. These men are to be
commended for the excellent research material and data which they have completed. On behalf of the State
Council and Ministry of Eastern North Carolina, I express deep appreciation to Reverend W. P. Pope,
Chairman, for his leadership and direction to Reverend Maynard and Reverend Reeder for their diligent
involvement. May this history serve as in informative and inspirational book to those who read it.

EARLY HISTORY
The State of North Carolina has played an important role in the establishment and history of the Church
of God during the past 100 years.
As the 100 year celebration of this denomination is remembered, no doubt much of the historical records
find their origin in North Carolina. The revival that set this church in motion is traced back to the Shearer
School house in Cherokee County, North Carolina, when Billy Martin, Joe Tipton, and Milton McHabb
began revival with fourteen Baptist people who were seeking God for a deeper experience. It was during
this revival that the Reverend R. G. Spurling and the newly organized Christian Union Church joined the
group and formed one congregation with Spurling as it's pastor.
Those early years, though severe with persecutions from without, will be remembered as days of revival.
New churches sprang up as new people were won daily and joined the church. The hills of Eastern
Tennessee and Western North Carolina were ablaze with revival!
The first General Overseer, Reverend A. J. Tomilinson, a resident of North Carolina became pastor of the
Camp Creek Church in June of 1903. He also served as Moderator for the very first General Assembly in the
home of W. F. Bryant, attended by 21 delegates.
The Broad Creek Church of God was the first Eastern North Carolina congregation to be organized in
1919.
Later that year, Snowd Branch was organized and was host for this denomination's first campmeeting.
Held in 1924, the Snowd Branch Campmeeting remains the oldest continuing campmeeting in the
Church of God.
A regional state office was established in Kenly, North Carolina in 1966. From land purchased by the
church from the Wilson County School District. A regional Campmeeting began several years later and
the campground facilities were developed and expanded under the director of Reverend Robert Hart.
During this ten year period of development, several buildings were erected, including the present
tabernacle which annually host a Summer campmeeting the third week in June. The first youth camp at
Kenly convened July 19-23, 1971 and 129 young people were in attendance. Reverend Bob Sustar was
serving as Youth Director at that time. Jesse Boyd was the evening speaker for services held in the second
floor of the State Office Building.
Following Reverend Hart's administration, the Kenly campground and church ministries for the part of
North Carolina were directed by several outstanding Evangelism and Home Mission Directors. Reverends
C. R. Tedder, Walter Barwick, James Griffin, and Billy D. Franklin served during the years 1972-85. In
September 1985, Reverend Kenneth R. Looney was appointed as State Evangelism Director.
In January, 1979, 'he ministers of North Carolina approved the establishment of an office of Youth and
Christian Educaton Director for Kenly. During the next five years, Reverend Kenneth R. Boyd and
Reverend Larry M. Poole served as Youth and Christian Education Directors for the Kenly office.
Following the '84 Assembly, Reverend Bill Isaacs was appointed as State Youth and Christian Education
Director. February 1984 was an historical date for the entire state of North Carolina. During a special
called ministers meeting moderated by General Overseer, Dr. E. C. Thomas, the recommendation for
dividing North Carolina into two separate administrative states was approved by a vote of the ministry.
Following the 60th General Assembly in Fort Worth, Texas, Eastern North Carolina became officially
AAA State with a membershipof 16,000 and 191 churches from Sanford, Hillsborough, and Pembroke on
the west to Wilmington, White Oak, and Manns Harbor on the east. Reverend W. Edward Smith and his
wife Joanna received the appointment as the very first State Overseer. During the first two years of their
administration, the state has purchased a new state parsonage adjacent to the present property.
Remodeling projects to the State Office and Evangelism Director's home have been completed and paid
for.
The Church of God in Eastern North Carolina is healthy and alive and moving forward to reap the
gigantic harvest of souls in Eastern North Carolina.

The state council assists and advises the state overseer on regular matters of business and administration
arising between ministers' meetings. Its duties include overseeing the state budget, approving disburse-
ments of funds, assisting in the development of the state program, hiring selected members of the state
staff, and otherwise assisting the state overseer at his direction. The state council normally meets
approximately four times per year.

Evangelism is the heart throb of the church. Every facet of our church work or endeavor should hinge on
evangelism. The Word of God declares we should look on the fields for they are white already to harvest.
The Evangelism Department is faced with reaching the lost, strengthening the believer, and guidance to
the unfortunate through its various ministries. It is with christian joy we share with you these outreach
ministries that bless our church.
One of our main thrust in Evangelism is the planting of new churches. Much ground work has to be made
before this becomes a possibility. The Evangelism Director and/or District Overseer must find an
individual who feels a burden for a certain area. Then it usually follows that a building must be found. In
most cases the Evangelism Department has to help for a short period of time to supplement this new
mission before they can handle the financial responsibility. After months of ministering to their
congregation, a church is birth and many are added to the kingdom of God.
Evangelist play a vital role in the success of Evanglism. The Church of God has placed their ministry
under the guidance and supervision of the Evangelism Department. These men and women are equal in
status to all other ministers and are instruments of blessing to the overall success of revival and evangelism
in our denomination.
In the outreach program of Evangelism are other vital ministries such as, Prison Ministry, Ethnic
Ministry, Lay Involvement, Child Evcangelism, Ministry to the Military, S.A.F.E. Clubs, Men's
Fellowships, P.F.C'S and local church evangelism.
God has undergirded our evangelistic thrust with His mighty blessings. In the words of the Apostle Paul,
he wrote to the church at Cornith, "One Planteth and another watereth, But Its God That Gives The
Increase."

The Youth and Christian Education Department accepts as its purpose to "serve the local church" by
providing the training, tools, and programs that enable the local church to disciple converts into the
kingdom of God.
The changing trends of a modern society are reasons for the department to stay current with the changes in
curriculum and programs. The challenge of the day is to reach people of all ages, categories and needs. By
providing ministry opportunities for youth such as YWEA, STEP, WEAC and STEP II, the department is
helping youth to fulfill the Great Commission on a global level. In addition, programs such as Teen
Talent and Youth Camp, provide service training opportunities for youth to use their skills in the local
church ministry.
The Youth and Christian Education Board serves the state by working closely with the State Director to
implement programs and activities which encourage youth involvement and promote strong youth
fellowship.
With the coming of the Lord so close, let us strive in order that it will never be said of us as it was of another
generation --"And there arose another generation after them which knew not the Lord, nor yet the mighty
works which He had done in Iseral" Judges 2:10

The Biblical Writer James said, that "Pure Religion" involves caring for the fatherless; thus we have the
Scriptural meaning of The Church of God Children's Home as it exists now.
The idea of a Church of God Children's Home in North Carolina was born in the mind of the Reverend A.
V. Childers, pastor of the Elm Street Church of God, Kannapolis, North Carolina. The Lord works in
mysterious ways and this was nonetherless true in the beginning of this Institution.
On January 10th, 1944, on a dreary Monday night two small girls were left at the home of one of the radio
listeners of the Elm Street Church and then later, a five months old boy was left at the parsonage. This was
God's way of confirming what the young minister had felt for a long time that an Orphanage must be
started, financed by his own people, that would later be the home of hundred of otherwise homeless
children.
On the third Sunday of January 1944, the children were compassionatedly presented to the Elm Street
Church's congregation, and the Lord again proved that He was the initiator of such a vast program. The
congregation felt that a Children's Home was the need of the hour and responded by laying thousands of
dollars on the altar and pledged thousands more. It was a simple beginning but the fact that God was in it,
made it worthwhile and far-reaching. The young pastor and his wife kept five children in their home for
nine months - until a suitable place could be found.
Located now midway between Concord and Kannapolis, North Carolina, off Winecoff School Road and
Highway 29-A, the Church of God Home for Children is situated upon a beautiful 275 acre tract of land.

As the church grew, it became evident that there was a need for state meetings. At these meetings, the
ministers and laymen could fellowship and worship together.
As early as 1924, the Snowd Branch church saw the need for such a gathering. In 1925 a tent was erected
under the leadership of A. L. Crisp, founder of the church. The speaker for the first Camp Meeting was
Jack Heath.
By September 10, 1927, the first tabernacle had been contructed. The land was donated by J. O. Jackson
and the men cut the timber and built the tabernacle themselves. The building committee consisted of
Willie Crisp, Fred Hardy, C. H. Dean, Walter Jackson, Dan Mizell, Dave Leggett, Lee Pittman, Johnny
Pridgen, John P. Hodges, Joe Griffin, J. S. Stancel and Lon Lilley, and Luther and Godfrey Little.
This Camp Meeting started locally, but during the 50's the state took it over for about seven years. Later it
was again operated locally by four districts: Washington, New Bern, Plymouth, and Greenville.
From this local meeting, a state convention was begun, lasting three or four days. In 1932, the first state
convention convened at Erwin, NC with J. L. Stephens as State Overseer.

In 1966, the Kenly Assembly Grounds were purchased from the Wilson County School District. At the
1968 Ministers Meeting 550,000 was appropriated for expansion and development of these grounds.
At the present, the facilities include the old school house which houses the State Overseer's office,
Evangelism Directors office, the State Youth & CE Directors office, Secretary's office, Council Room,
Assembly Room, Cafeteria, and boys' dorm rooms. Also on the seventy-one (71) acres is a beautiful girls'
dorm, swimming pool, State Overseers Parsonage, State Evangelism Parsonage, State Youth & CE
Directors Parsonage, caretaker's home, tabernacle, which seats 3,000 and concession stands.

Eastern North Carolina Ladies Ministries President
In 1929, Mrs. S. J. Woods, wife of the Overseer of Texas, organized the first women's auxiliary under the
name of Ladies Willing Worker Band. This organization was endorsed by the General Assembly in 1936 as
a church-wide auxiliary. Later, in the 1970 General Assembly, their name was changed to Ladies
Auxiliary.
For many years the ladies of North Carolina had ladies auxiliaries functioning in the local churches. They
were known by various names such as Ladies Prayer Band, Dorcas Circle, and Ladies Aid. Today their title
is Ladies Ministries.
These ladies worked in their homes, churches, and communities to further the cause of Christ. They have
supported the evangelistic outreach of the Church through prayer meetings, Bible Studies, and various
organizations. Home Missions and Foreign Missions have become a vital concern of these ladies.
Many times it becomes necessary that these ladies tithe their time to assist in raising funds to build their
churches and parsonages, to support their pastor and help in raising funds for other church projects.
INDIAN MINISTRIES
Eastern North Carolina is the Home of 33,000 American Indians. There are 14 Churches of God
Congergations among the Coharie, Haliwa, and Lumbee. The Saddletree Church was first organized on
December 2, 1948 with 1 1 members. A Campground was Purchased and Tabernacle was built in year 1962.
One of the highlights is Camp Meeting time. Each September beginning the week of Labor Day Camp
Meeting begins.

SPANISH MINISTRIES
First Spanish Church began March 16, 1986 in Raleigh with services convening at the Raleight Church of
God, 219 Georgetown Road, on Sunday afternoons. The attendance is running 40-50. Rev. Paul Saffle is
the Leader. Pray for this mission work.

Consistent with the changing world are the changes that take place in the church and its administration.
One of the recent changes is that of the coordinator of Black Ministries in the state of North Carolina, until
recently The Reverend Alphonso Slaughter gallantly coordinated the office of Black Ministries in North
Carolina. But as of October 1985 The Reverend George Peart assumes the role of coordinator of Black
Ministries.
Brother Peart and wife Jireta were born in Jamaica and reared in England, where they accepted the Lord
and the call to the ministry of the Church of God. Brother Peart is a graduate of Ebenezer Bible College,
Birmingham, England, Lee College, and Middle Tennessee State University.
After studying at Ebenezer for two years, 1964-1966 Brother Peart entered the pastoral ministry and has
pastored several successful churches until 1977. Then, he and his wife and son, Dave came to the States to
study at Lee College, Cleveland, Tennessee.
During the time he was here he pastored for awhile in Florence, South Carolina and in Cleveland,
Tennessee. He also pastored in Dayton, Tennessee, where in 1981 he started a flourishing church.
Brother Peart has been involved in conventions, speaking at the district, national, and international level
since 1968. In addition he has broad experience in evangelism, counseling, seminars, and most recently he
served as the Dean of Students and full time Lecturer at Overstone College in Northhampton, England.
He held this position from 1983 until Octyober 1985.

The Church had its beginning in 1920. Jim Lewis started holding meetings in homes, then in tents, and
finally a small, unpainted building was erected on Terrapin Track Road. Lewis gave the lumber and Mr.
and Mrs. Jarvis Woolard gave the land.
In 1923 an outstanding revival was held in a tent by Reverend Brantley. Holiness was hated in the Alligood
and Woolard community and it was felt that Revenend Brantley's life was in danger. Christians came to
church holding a gun in one hand and a lantern in the other hand to protect the preacher. It was said of
some men from "Hooten Town" that they came to the tent to, and I quote,"Tar and feather him." A white
shroud was made by the opposers for the burial of a mighty preacher named Brantley. The church
withstood the forces of hinderances and God's word went forth and was received by many souls.
The charter members who are still alive are Nancy Hollis, age 91, Florence Coward, age 83, Elsie
Alligood, age 64.
BATH CHURCH OF GOD

The Bath Church of God was organized on Apeil 27, 1957 with 12 charter members. Reverend A. V.
Childers officiated the ceremony. Reverend Ottis M. Crisp, Sr. was assigned as the first pastor. The services
had been conducted in an old hardware store here in Bath. In 1962 the present church was built. Reverend
Louis F. Smith supervised the new building program and pastored at the Bath church for 14 years.
In 1974 Sam Worthington was assigned to come to Bath and is still our pastor. Our membership has
increased through all the years and we still have 7 of the original members living. The church has had
many things done to it during the years. Sunday School rooms have been added, bathrooms added, and a
mobile home for the parsonage purchased. We are very thankful and we also praise the Lord for helping
us.
BENSON CHURCH OF GOD

The Benson Church of God was organized in 1949 following a tent revival held in the vicinity by Pastor
Sam Harris and Evengelist W. P. Pope. Four charter members are still living and are current members of
the local church. They are: Joseph C. Wiggins, Florence Strickland, and Earl and Margaret Whitman.
The first pastor of the church was Reverend J. C. Whittenton, who served from July 1950 until August
1 953. The first church building was completed under his pastorate and was known as the Friendly Chruch
of God. The name was later changed to the Benson Church of God. Sunday School rooms were added to
the church when the Reverend C. H. Deans was pastor (1954-1958), and the Reverend R. E. Johnson in
1963 led the congregation in remodeling and enlarging the church building to accommodate growth.
The most recent building program was completed in 1 980 under the pastorate of the Reverend J. P. Betts,
Jr. when the old structure was completely demolished and a new sanctuary and educations department
were dedicated on Sunday, January 13, 1980 in a service conducted by the Reverend T. L. Lowery.
The Benson Church of God currently has 62 members, with an average Sunday School attendance of 105.
The Reverend Jerry Hall is pastor, having served since January 1984 until the present.

We purchased a building on Stronach and Herring
Street.

CLINTON CHURCH OF GOD
206 Overland Road
Clinton, North Carolina
The Clinton church was organized on August 9, 1948, in a tent on Ferrell Street in Clinton. This church
had many different places through the years to hold its services. One building was lost in a fire and the
church lost everything it had. They soon were able to purchase some property with a house. The pastor,
Reverend E. F. Sibbett, moved into the house and a tent was used for worship.
The next move for the church came in August of 1976, when they moved into the present sanctuary located
on Overland Road just off NC 24. This beautiful church and parsonage situated on 1 1 acres of land was
built under the leadership of Sister Hazel Carver, our pastor at the time. The total indebtedness was
approximately $155,000 and at the Home Coming on October 1984 a note burning took place!
The Pastor at the time of the note burning was Reverend William Braswell. The time of the note burning
will always be remembered as a time of rejoicing for the Clinton Church of God.
ELIZABETH CITY CHURCH OF GOD

Elizabeth City, North Carolina
From a store-front beginning with 12 charter members, Reverend James Briley organized the Elizabeth
City Church in the early 1950's.
Because of its growth and centralized location, the church became the Elizabeth City District Church with
Reverend I. C. Morris, Sr. serving as pastor for the local, as well as, the district churches. Land was
purchased and the local church was built on Richardson Street.
Reverend J. D. Allen, Reverend B. V. Childers, and Reverend J. A. Smith consecutively pastored the
church and as a result of their leadership, a parsonage was purchased, a Sunday School complex was
constructed and the church mortgage was paid in full.
During the consecutive pastorates of Reverend Sam Craft, Reverend A. B. Hamm, Reverend P. C. Parker,
Reverend J. A. Faircloth, Reverend M. T. Owens and Reverend J. C. Goudelock, our fellowship hall
constructed, additional property was purchased and the interior of the church, the Sunday School and the
parsonage were renovated.
Now under the leadership of our present pastor, Reverend Keith Cox, we will complete by January 1, 1986
a debt-free parsonage.
Essex Church of God

In the year of 1970, because there was a need for a Church of God in the area, Mr. Murzie Mills along with a
group of people, decided to start a Church of God in his home. A combination of Halifax and Warren
county residents came together in an Indian Community to establish a Church of God. With donations
and concerns from our District Church, Roanoke Rapids Church of God we began to move forward.
Then, Rufus B. Hux Construction Company, who was in charge of the construction of the church, gave
donations and built the building at cost. Land was donated by Mr. Capps and two acres were purchased.
This gave the church four acres of land.
In August of 1972, the Essex Church of God was organized by Reverend Robert Hart with fourteen charter
members. That day they began having services in the new building. Reverend Bobby Hunt was the first
pastor in the new building with 120 in attendance the first Sunday.
The church has been organized about thirteen and one half years and seven pastors have served there. The
are: (1) Reverend Robert Hart (pastored while services were being held in the Mills home), (2) Reverend
Bobby Hunt, (3) Reverend Stone, (4) Reverend Timothy Matthew, (5) Reverend Jack Wall, (6) Reverend
Fitzhe Mills, and (7) Reverend James Earl Hunt.
FAIR HAVEN CHURCH OF GOD
Route 4
Benson, North Carolina
The church was organized in a building known as tin lizzie in 1932 with eight members and in 1934 the
group built the beginning structure of the building that is presently worshipped in.
Reverend Will Turnage organized the church and since then Reverend Leonard. There are still two
charter members alive, Sister Rowenna Barefeet and Sister Gertie McLamb.
Brother Marvin Haywood furnished his house for the prayer meetings which is how the church got its
start.

FARMINGTON HEIGHTS CHURCH OF GOD
Wilson, North Carolina
The Reverend A. U. Childers held a two weeks tent meeting Septembr 15 to 30, 1947. There was a Church
organized with 27 members by the Reverend Archie Luke. He also built the Church which was our
Educational Department. The Reverend Archie Luke served the Church from October 1947 to 1949.
The Reverend A. H. Clark was appointed to the Church in 1949, and served until 1950. The Reverend E. L.
Moore was appointed to the Church in August 1950 and served until 1952. The Reverend A. L. Hewette
was appointed to the Church August 1952 and served until 1954. The Reverend W. P. Pope Jr. was
appointed to the Church August 1954 and served until 1958.
The Reverend P. A. Howard was appointed to the Church August 1958 and served until August 1965. He
built our sanctuary and fellowship hall in 1964 and 1965 adjacent to the old church building. The
Reverend H. L. Helms was appointed to the Church August 1965 and served until 1966. The Reverend G.
G. Easom was appointed to the Church 1966 and served the Church until August 1970. The Reverend B. A.
Harper Jr. was appointed to the Church 1970 and served until August 1978. The Reverend M. L. Herring
was appointed to the Church August 1978 and served until February 1980.
The Reverend Eugene Powers was appointed to the Church February 1980 and is serving as our pastor at
present. The new church was dedicated April 1982.
These fine Ministers have been instruments in the progress of the Church. We now have 272 members.
Bennett Johnson served as church clerk for 32 years.
GRINDLE CREEK
Route 5
Greenville, North Carolina
This church was started at a crossroad in a pig parlor; then converted into a mission. The church was
organized in 1942 with 8 members. The charter members who are still living are: W. J. Davenport, Arthur
Hannah, Mary Hannah, Magdeline Jones, and Leroy Warren.
Since organization of the church, there have been sixteen (16) pastors. Reverend A. A. Hannah was an
outstanding member and worker for the church. He willingly and freely gave of his time to do a variety of
jobs. A friend gave a large pine tree to make the flooring of the church. Brother Hannah, Brother
Davenport, which was the first pastor, and a peg-legged black man took a log truck and went to the town
of Belvoir and got the tree and carried it to the mill and had it cut up to make the flooring.
We built a new church adjoining the old one in 1977. We bricked the old church to match new one and
converted the old church into Sunday School rooms and Fellowship Hall.
FIFTEENTH STREET CHURCH OF GOD

Washington, North Carolina
An effort to organize a Church of God in Washington was begun about the year of 1934, but was fruitless.
About 1938 the doors of a home were opened for prayer meeting. The meetings continued to take place in
various homes until 1943, then a tent was purchased and the first tent meeting was held on the corner of
Sixth and Bonner Streets. This property was purchased on March 10, 1943. Later a severe storm destroyed
the first tent. Later a larger tent was purchased and a 13 week revival was held and from this resulted the
organization fo the church in the summer of 1943.
The worship meetings took place in a store building for a time. Construction of a small wooden church
was begun in 1945 and completed in 1946. It was located on the corner of Sixth and Bonner Streets. In 1948,
a project to remodel the building and add Sunday School classrooms was undertaken, and in 1949 the
project was completed. Two years later a youth center was constructed at the rear of the church and a
parsonage was purchased on Thirteenth Street.
An option to buy some property on Fifteenth Street was purchased on October 3, 1955, after much
sacrifice, and prayer the church moved into the beautiful structure on Fifteenth Street which was dedicated
in July 1962.
The early church in Washington faced opposition, but her love and concern for others flourished. From a
seemingly fruitless venture about 1934, to the humble cottage prayer meeting in 1938, the great tent revival
of 1943, the store building on Market and Fifth, the official organization on July 30, 1944, the 1946
building on Sixth and Bonner, to the beautiful modern style church on Fifteenth Street in 1962, to our
present sanctuary dedicated on December 3, 1978, moves the Washington Church of God.
HERITAGE CHURCH OF GOD

On April 7, 1979 the Heritage Church of God was set in motion by the Eastern Evangelism Director,
Reverend Walter Barwick. The Reverend Jesse Elmore was appointed as the first pastor for the church.
More than 150 people were in attendance for this organizational service. There were 12 chartered
members.
On the first Sunday that Sunday School was held there were 43 in attendance and the tithes were $232.
Today the membership is 41 and the tithes are $1,500 per month. Of the 12 chartered members, 11 are still
here at the Heritage Church of God!
HILLSBOROUGH CHURCH OF GOD
Eno Street
Hillsborough, North Carolina
The first cottage prayer meetings for this church were conducted by Brother and Sister Tom Bowman and
their family. Meetings were held in many different places throughout the first year. In 1935 Mr. James
Webb, owner of Eno Gotten Mill, gave the church a three room house on the mountain and the church was
organized in 1935 with the Reverend E. C. Mize as the first pastor. Mr. Webb also gave the church the land
where the present church is located. Mr. John Mangum gave the lumber for the church to be built. This
present church was built in 1945 and 1946.
Tom West was the first pastor. The parsonage was built in the early 1950's with Reverend Petrucellias the
pastor. There were many things updated through the years and all our pastors had a part in this. In 1983
we purchased and paid for the land for our new church while Reverend Stephens was pastor. We also
purchased and set up our new double wide mobile home as the new parsonage while Brother Darr was our
pastor in early 1985.
THE JOHNSONVILLE CHURCH OF GOD

Cameron, North Carolina
The Johnsonville church was organized by Reverend Andrew Sharum in November 1984. There are two
chartered members still attending the church today.
The church had eight people baptized at its first baptismal service. The first evangelist was the Reverend
G. H. Grooms from Kenly, N.C. The first Homecoming service was in September of 1975.
The church has had many pastors since the beginning, and they have all done a good job. We are
averaging 71 or more in attendance and have 59 members. The church is also planning to build a new
church this summer - 1986.
NEW LIGHT CHURCH OF GOD
Route 1
Wake Forest, North Carolina
In the year of 1947 God blessed the New Light Community with a Holy Ghost Revival. There were
nominal Churches in the area, but not a full Gospel church. The field was ripe and ready for harvest.
Many people in this community were ready for a new church and ready for the Holy Ghost baptism.
Re .erend E. H. Babb, pastor of the Wake Forest church, began cottage prayer meetings. Interest was great;
and many were touched by the Lord in these meetings. The first meeting was held in 1947 at the home of
James Jones.
Brother Babb saw the hearts of the people were hungry for God, so he began a revival in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Fel ton Smith in March of 1947. The Smith's had a 10 year old son, Charles, who became the clerk
of the church, (for 22 years).
After two weeks of revival in the Smith's home, Brother Babb borrowed a gospel tent and continued the
revival for three more weeks. On May 3, 1947, at the end of a five week revival the New Light Church of
God was organized with 16 chartered members.
Although Brother Babb pastored the Wake Forest church, he came to preach to us until our first pastor was
appointed, Reverend Sam Leonard. Brother Leonard built the first church in 1948.
NEW BERN CHURCH OF GOD

New Bern, North Carolina
The New Bern Church of God was organized in February 1949, with Reverend Millard Maynard in a tent
revival. Reverend Frank Crawford was the first pastor. The attendance was 16. Funds for the first building
consisted of special contributions and love offerings. Reverend Neal Gagle supervised the construction
and did most of the labor.
In December of 1967 under the leadership of Milan Boyd, the present church was completed and ready for
occupancy. One of the most outstanding revivals was with Reverend John McLendon from Goldsboro,
North Carolina. This revival convened for three consecutive weeks.
On February 26, 1974, the interior of the present New Bern Church of God was destroyed by fire. After
much hard work along with the advice from Reverend Raymond Murray, renovations were complete and
the New Bern Church was ready for worship again in August 1974.
NORTHSIDE, FAIRMONT CHURCH OF GOD

Kirksey, Stelford Smith, and Numer Locklear.

PINE VALLEY CHURCH OF GOD

The Pine Valley church was organized on January 2, 1929 by Reverend John L. Stephens. The church
services were held in an old store at Fourth and Castle Street. Reverend C. W. Coates was appointed as
pastor of the church and Roy Pierce as the clerk. There were 12 charter members.
In October 1929, Reverend F. A. Hubbell succeeded Reverend Coates and during this time, the church
purchased the property at 41 1 Wright Street. In 1930 Reverend W. B. Sumner came to pastor the church.
And in 1931 Reverend G. C. Hamby came as pastor and served for five years. Great accomplishments were
made and the membership reached 150.
In 1939 W. W. Harmon came as the pastor and began plans for a new church building. A lot was
purchased. During this time Reverend Harmon became very ill and died leaving the work to be carried on
by V. D. Combs. He completed the plans for the church building and it was finished on March 1 , 1942.
Reverend C. R. Callihan and Reverend John Byrd temporarily succeeded Brother Combs for about three
months until Reverend P. H. McCarn assumed postoral duties in October 1946. The church then had a
membership of 259 with a large Sunday School attendance. An educational building was erected during
this time.
Reverend Ray Collins succeeded Brother Henry in 1955 and the church began to sponsor a weekly radio
program. In 1964 Reverend G. E. Weatherby succeeded Brother Collins. In 1966 Reverend C. R. Tedder
came as pastor and began the hard struggle of building a new church. Brother Royce Morgan became the
church clerk in 1969. In July 1970, the move was made and our congregation became known as the Pine
Valley Church of God.
Reverend E. L. Newton came as pastor in September 1972 and Reverend T. A. Little joined the staff as the
Associate Pastor/Music Director. In 1974, Reverend Morris, Jr. assumed the pastoral duties.
In 1980 Reverend B. A. Harper came as pastor to the Pine Valley Church of God. He stayed until June of
1985. The Pine Valley Church of God is now under the leadership of Reverend B. D. Franklin.
RALEIGH CHURCH OF GOD

In 1934, in the southern part of Raleigh, a small, but effective tent revival was conducted. From that
revival, the Raleigh Church of God began with Reverend Butler as its first pastor. With only a few
members, the church began to grow and two years later it was chartered in 1936. The Raleigh Church of
God has striven to fulfill the need of its congregation for nearly 50 years, and as a "Growing Church," we
are happy to be a vital part of a growing city. The present building was erected in 1962 by Reverend Russell
Tedder, pastor. An expansion program is planned in 1986 with Reverend W. P. Pope, Jr.
NORTH ROCKY MOUNT CHURCH OF GOD

Early in the 1950's there came a desire and a need to have a second Church of God in the city of Rocky
Mount, North Carolina. Under the very able leadership of the Pastor, the Reverend Archie Luke and his
Assistant Pastor, the Reverend W. C. Swilley, this became a reality.
Sometime in the year of 1951 land was secured and a building was erected in North Rocky Mount for a
Church of God by that name. The church was organized on August 4, 1951 . The first service in the new
building was on April 13, 1952.
There were 78 members, some who lived in the northern part of the city, who made up the new
congregation. Reverend W. C. Swilley became the pastor of this very young church. Since that time the
church has been honored to have some of the finest preachers in the Church of God as their pastors.
NEWTON GROVE CHURCH OF GOD

Newton Grove, North Carolina
The church began as a weekly cottage prayer meeting from house to house in 1953 and joined the Free Will
Holiness Association. Later pulled out and in September 1955 the group joined the Church of God. At
that time, we had the building hulled in and wood shavings for the floor. It is a concrete block building.
We joined the Church of God with twelve members. Reverend R. D. Howell was pastor at the time and
being a Church of God member and in his first pastorate, he led us in the Church of God. He continued as
pastor until his resignation. He felt the Lord was calling him to move on. He was succeeded by another
young preacher from Patetown Church of God. His name was Reverend Hugh Freeman Chase. He has
been succeeded by Reverend B. S. Mozingo, Reverend J. B. Hudson, Reverend Larry Price, and presently
Reverend Archie Raynor, Jr.
Our first Sunday School was organized in 1954 with 26 attending under Brother Howell's leadership and
had our first Sunday School in our new building on Easter Sunday 1955 with 129 in attendance in the
afternoon. Our Sunday morning Sunday School record attendance is about 79.
The Ladies Auxilliary was already organized when the church was organized. Brother Howell also lead in
organizing a Y. P. E. while he was pastor.
NORTH RALEIGH CHURCH OF GOD

Raleigh, North Carolina
On October 27, 1985, at its temporary location in the Norwood May School, on Spring Forest Road in
Raleigh, North Carolina, a new Church of God was born: North Raleigh Church of God. The pastor is
the Reverend Billy Johnson. The following ministers presided at the Organizational Ceremony: Reverend
Kenneth R. Looney, Director of Evangelism and Home Mission for ENC, Reverend Douglas Allen, pastor
of the Cary Church and Reverend W. P. Pope, Jr. District Overseer and pastor of the Raleigh Church of
God, Georgetown Road. The church was organized and chartered with sixteen members.
The history of the new work began while Reverend Johnson was serving as a staff member with the Cary
Church. It was during his years of ministry with that church that he received a vision from the Lord to do a
work in North Raleigh. This was first initiated through a home Bible Study. Later with the assistance of
Reverend Pope and Reverend Allen steps were taken to fully implement the new work. That occurred on
July 7, 1985.
SNOWD BRANCH CHURCH OF GOD

Washington, North Carolina
The Snowd Branch church was first built about seven miles northwest of its present location. Joe Crisp
who gave the land for the church to be built on was also one of the church's first chartered members. This
was around 1916.
The church was later moved to another location in 1921. This land was also donated by a member. Now
the church is located about twenty-five yards from the old site. The new church was supervised by
Reverend Odell Simmons with some help by many members and friends.
The Snowd Branch church is the founder of the first Church of God Camp Meeting in North Carolina.
WARRENTON CHURCH OF GOD

Warrenton, North Carolina
The Warrenton Church of God was organized in 1933 by Reverend John Henry McDowell in the home of
Mrs. Carrie Parrott. The State Overseer was Reverend John L. Stevens.
The Charter members of the church were Mrs. Ida Harrison, Mrs. Carrie Parrott, Mrs. Mary Jane Inscoe,
Mrs. Mollie Cameron and Mrs. Hattie Whitmore.
In 1935 the church purchased a small tract of land and built the first Church of God in Warrenton. The
original building was thirty feet long and eighteen feet wide. Reverend Issac Hinton, Reverend Jody
Leonard, Reverend Clem Deans, and Reverend E. E. Hurst were among the first pastors. The small church
struggled to retain its existance through the early years. It grew and reached an attendance of
approximately 100 to 125 at one point. The attendance has fluctuated through the years.
In 1970 under the leadership of Reverend David Hatcher, a new church was constructed on another piece
of property purchased in a lovely section of Warrenton. In 1971 during the pastorate of Reverend Y. Z.
Isaacs, a house and property adjacent to the church property was purchased for a parsonage. Today we
have a beautiful brick sanctuary with Sunday School Annex and a beautiful brick parsonage located on
approximately five acres of land. The indebtedness on all property was paid in 1983 during the pastorate
of Reverend R. D. Howell. The church is in the process of beginning a new building program to add a
fellowship hall to the church.
BAILEY CHURCH OF GOD
The Rev. C. H. Deans began having services in a store bulding in the '50. One of the first revivals in the store
building was conducted by Sis. Mary Hannah.
Sept. 10, 1961 Bro. Deans had a dedication for the new church building. During the pastorate of Rev. Jerry
McBride the church was bricked and an education department and fellowship hall added.
Our present pastor, Rev. M. D. Pope was appointed to Bailey July 5, 1985 with a membership of 54. Under
his leadership the church has grown to a membership of 72.
WEST MOUNT CHURCH OF GOD
1330 Bethlehem Road
Rocky Mount, North Carolina
A group of people met several times for prayer meetings. From these meetings, the West Mount Church of
God was organized in one of the homes on July 1, 1979. By the end of the month there were 41 charter
members. Reverend P. A. Howard, a retired minister worked with the members and Reverend Archie Luke
became the first pastor.
On July 22, 1979 the congregation held its first service in a former Baptist church building acquired by
lease. By October 1979 the congregation purchased 7.8 acres of choice land and began making plans to
build a church.
Many members worked untiringly and in June of 1 980 the first service was held in the new sanctuary. On
December 14, 1980, the State Overseer, Reverend P. H. McSwain dedicated the facility. Immediately a new
parsonage was built. We only borrowed $15,000 for the entire building program. Everything was paid by
January 1985 and West Mount Church was free of debt. The property tax evaluation has been placed at
$638,740.
There were lots of donations made such as money, materials, time, Hammond organ, pews, and a new
$13,000 Baldwin grand piano. To God be the glory for the things He hath done.

CHURCH OF GOD

In 1922 the church was organized with 7 members. Two ladies brought the pentecostal message into the
community and prayed that a minister would come and help them. These two ladies, Mrs. India Crowder
and Mrs. Laura Poole became charter members and spent an entire lifetime serving the local church. God
sent them ministers - among them a Reverend Shanks, Reverend C. H. Deans and Reverend Arlanda
Crisp. Reverend Deans became the first pastor, services being conducted in the homes of the community.
In May of 1929 the small group was happy to have their own little church. About 6 years later, under the
direction of Reverend A. L. Hewitt a larger church was built next to the old one and the former church
became the parsonage.
The church grew and prospered under the leadership of able ministers. In 1946 a young man with a vision
became pastor and picked out beautiful property on which he desired to build a beautiful stone church.
Reverend E. H. Babb worked untiringly and sacrificially and got the building going; but it was completed
under the leadership of Reverend T. N. Ward in 1949. It was in May - 20 years from the small church first
built until the completion of the stone church still being used.
In 1972, under the direction of Pastor Jack Hughes, the church observed its Fiftieth Anniversary. It was a
grest day for the church, with many dignitaries, including the U. S. Senator, B. Everette Jordan present.
Reverend Wade Horton delivered the morning message and it was a great day for the church and
community.
In May of 1982, observing the 60th anniversary, the church, under the leadership of Reverend Ronald
Mizell, sponsored a day of remembering and honoring former pastors. Eight of the pastors came, some
from great distances, and many former members and friends enjoyed the day greatly.
EAST LUMBERTON CHURCH OF GOD
Organized in 1943 by Reverend J. B. McClendon, the East Lumberton church was an outgrowth of several
years of work in cottage prayer meetings, tent revivals, and the like. Under the ministry of Reverend Carr
Mercer, a second building was constructed across the street and occupied in 1947. During the next twenty
years the church was to blossom in size and ministry. A new, modern structure was built in 1977 and has a
seating capacity of more than 900 with attendant classrooms and offices. During its 43 year span, the East
