Business, love, art, wine [oh yeah, the wine is coming] are just some of the fabulous subjects WL loves to present and caress. But like our lives, the dimensions of work and life are evolving relent- lessly. As a result, WL has no choice but to keep pace. My hope is that such transformation in our subject matter will keep WL fresh and fun for our readership, and I have a hardworking and intriguing staff that helps ensure this. But, true to my nature, I am dreaming bigger. I want the deepest roster of journalistic talent in the history of magazine publication, and I��m asking our entire readership – yes, I��m speaking to you – to join my editorial team to achieve this goal. Our lives change by the nanosecond, and I believe the only way to keep pace with such dynamism is to harvest all of your ideas on maintaining the critical work-life balance. Thus I open our editorial calendar to you and your life circumstances and ask that you sub- mit your opinions and story ideas whenever inspiration sets in. This may drive our advertisers crazy, but I believe it more important that WL be your magazine: a source of practical, honest, and humorous content that enables you to maximize life��s moments and render them indelible. WL is already seeing the fruits of these efforts and has added two columns to the monthly lineup as a result of reader feedback. The first, Fit On My Own, broaches personal struggle with weight loss and introduces a whole food diet and exercise regimen to combat unwanted pounds, assaults on self-esteem, and productivity loss. Gold Diggers Monthly addresses social climbing and self-advance- ment through romantic relationships, applying the principle of sym- biotic business deals to such couplings so that all participants win in the short and long-terms. Work & Lifestyle magazine is becoming more about people and less about things. Thus the addition of Movers & Shakers, a profile of in- dividual success in most issues. And while we are still on the subject of dynamism, this month��s M&S celebrates Reuben Canada, a former patent attorney who abandoned the legal career path to compete with the likes of Coke and Pepsi in the specialty beverage industry. I was introduced to Reuben by a mutual friend one evening at what was still 20 Manning. Needless to say, we entered into an immedia- te bromance. Rueben is effervescent and fun and has an incredible work ethic, and I buy his product Jin-Ja by the case. Ruben represents the WL reader exactly: young, hip, and intrepid. The fast movers. It is so easy to lose balance when you��re moving fast, but the WL community will continue to deliver perspective, ideas, and shared experiences. I��ll repeat what I said in our first issue: let��s take more responsibility for each other��s happiness. With that said, I hope you enjoy the issue, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

He is stimulating and high energy, much like his product Jin Ja, an all natural gin- gerdrink that is all three: tonic, mixer, and tea. Basically, it is the healthy ��Eat, Pray, Love�� solution to a night of good drinking. This product has its roots in Reuben��s ownkitchen one fateful evening, with a party imminent, and nothing to mix the booze with. �� I thought I would boil some ginger to make a simple syrup but it didn��t taste right.�� After several mixing attempts, a multi-purpose drink was born. Reuben and his friends loved it, and they have never looked back. After all, a group of corporate types drinking OJ and gin is so 1980s. A graduate of Swarthmore College (B.A in electrical engineering) and Howard Law School, Reuben was spending his time comfortably, albeit busily, at the top inte- llectual property law firm in Pennsylvania when his tonic lead him down the path to entrepreneurship. It was also a blessing in disguise that a recent breakup with a yoga instructor had left the remnants of a health kick; so all natural ingredients we- replentiful in his home when inspiration struck. It all seemed to fit, and Reuben made the move from corporate to ��oh shit��, I mean entrepreneurship. While his family took the news that he was leaving the firm calmly (after all he started his first business selling cookies at 11), his lawyer buddies cheered him on; they regularly ordered bottles of Jin Ja for their clients as presents, increasing his drinkership. Rueben started to manufac- ture large batches on his own, and sold it to the store next door to his house, where it sold out regularly for months, as well as to personal contacts. In addition, all his friends who partied with him the night Jin Ja was born, and those who subsequently tried it, returned regularly to ��clean him out.�� He decided it was time to create a recognizable brand, and immediately put his nose to grind stone creating a busi- ness plan and doing market research. Ca- nada Enterprises LLC incorporated while he continued to sell his product through word of mouth. In March 2011, Canada Enterprises andJin Ja attended its first drinks show. Reuben admits it was the first moment of great anxiety he experienced since star- ting the venture, ��My imagination is active, so visions of failure were there, and I had to remember to keep composure; never get too happy, never get too sad.�� In the end there was nothing to fear; he sold 300 bottles in four hours. His product is now available in 11 stores in the Tri-State area, including Green Isle, Di Bruno Brothers, Food and Friends, and others (For more information see www.jinjadrink.com). In more recent news Jin Ja will now be available at Whole Food Markets in Phila- delphia, Princeton NJ, and Jenkintown for $14-$16 per bottle. Reuben feels he has found his niche in the market; the high- end food market is a natural ally, ��If you like Jin Ja you aren��t the type who goes in for syrup and sugarladen mixers.��

Indeed, Jin Ja is delicious, and unlike anything available on the market right now. I cannot think of anything I would drink plain for health, and with liquor for fun. BIG plus-- Jin Ja makes for a hangover free drinking experience. Reuben says ��JinJa has a sensation to it, not just a wonderful flavor,�� and this is true; the flavor has a refreshing stinging quality that stays with you. Canada Enterprises plans to expand on this great flavor by increasing its brand to marinades and variations on Jin Ja. In 5 years, Reuben plans to create a national presence, and look to export opportunities in the international market. Starting a company and working with total focus toward his ambitions has come with a price of its own. Once a corporate man himself, he now has moments when he finds it hard to relate to people still on the 9-5 track, ��being the owner of a company requires more discipline, you never know what your life and schedule will be like tomorrow, nothing is planned for you.�� While it��s true this is a different life from his former one, he still makes time play, and keeps balanced with detailed to do lists and a strict schedule, �� I just treat empty time blocks like recess.�� During recess Reuben takes flying lessons and is hoping to get a motorcycle license soon. When he can escape he is off to ski, and if not, a movie will do. Not too bad but he still has some trips he wants to take, including sub-Saharan Africa and rural China. I have no doubt he will make it to those destinations, and beyond. After all, in 5 years he can squeeze those trips in while checking on his international drinkership. Until then he did pass on some good advice for those thinking of stepping out on their own in business, ��Keep good relationships, live like a college kid, and take full ow- nership of your dreams, not everyone will be with you.�� Oh, P.S. - Reuben is Single.

Job hunting has become America��s least favorite past time. In recent years the economy has- taken its toll on many ranging from recent grads to veterans of the corporate fields. Despite your education or ultimate desired career there��s only one question that each candidate wants to hear: ��When can you come in for an in- terview?�� This question has arguably repla- ced what was once the most desi- red (or dreaded) question of all time: ��Will you marry me?�� Since interviews are the more important ��blind dates�� in the unemployed world I��ve used my personal expe- rience in corporate America with a side of research to compile the most up-to-date advice and tips on how to nail your next job inter- view right down to your attire. Your first few steps begin before stepping foot onto the battlefield. 1. Resume. Thoroughly read the job description you��re applying for and cater your resume to co- ver each requirement and howyou have relevant experience. I��m not suggesting you fib, just document everything they��re looking for in a legible way and make your ex- perience stand out from the rest. Always bring a non-folded copy of your resume with you even if you��ve already emailed a copy. It shows that you��re prepared and serious. 2. Research the company. Re- view the company��s mission,goals, objectives, future plans, etc. upon arrival. You willmore than likely feel a little more comfortable whi- le you��re there and have a better response when asked why you want to be a part of their team. [This is a part of the secret] 3. Prepare. Come prepared with questions to ask at the end of the interview. Ask them what the company��s goals are in the next five years. This will reinforce your strong interest in the position and that you��re looking for something stable and long-term. Google: ��frequently asked interview ques- tions�� and practice your answers in front of the mirror, with someo- ne or just out loud so you can hear how your responses sound. Have goals and accomplishments in mind. You don��t want to appear careless and lazy. Find out who you should ask for when you arrive and be kind to the receptionist. He or she may have an influence on the overall decision. Bring a notepad and- leave the coffee or water in the car. Having a notebook is handy for you to remember necessary in- formation about the position and shows your professionalism.

Every great salesman understands the power of a good story. Stories paint pictures and the smart interviewee will want to control the vision of him/herself created in the mind of the employer. Your competitors will allow the interviewer to try and develop a vision through interview questions. Your own narrative will set you apart and make you memorable.
4. Dress professionally. Go into yourin- terview with confidence and style. Your fresh look will have more influence on the employers decision than you realize. After all you��re making a first impression. Men should wear a solid navy or dark colored suit and a white or neutral long sleeve shirt. If it��s summer, you can lose the jacket. Believe it or not the bow-tie is back! I would suggest a solid color tied properly. You will be more memorable for wearing one, too. A simple silk tie no less than three and a quarter inches wide will do too. Jeans and sneakers are simply out of the question. Women should arrive in a pants suit or with a skirt long enough to cover the thigh when sitting comfortably, coordina- ted blouse, limited jewelry, hair tied away from the face and as impressive as it may be, lose the stilettos. 5. The minor tweaks. All these minor- tips will have a major impact. Keep your cell phone off, do not wear cologne or- perfume, arrive at least five minutes early, have continuous eye contact, a strong hand shake and lastly, SMILE.
The Secret
Job seekers, especially those who have been unemployed for a period of time, or are fresh out of school, go in to interviews focused on gaining em- ployment - i.e . focused on what the employer can do for them - give them a job. But the employer also has issues to deal with. They have their own shade of your burden, although they are in the hiring position. Like all people with problems, employers seek solutions - in short, they seeking salvation - a savior of sorts - someone who can come in and take that position and make all the problems go away. It does not matter if the position is for a CEO or a doorman. The hiring man- ager needs to believe that you are the medicine for his pain.
So, here is the secret. After you��ve
taken the advice offered in number 2 of this article and have researched the company, you need to develop a nar- rative - a story- which pictures you in the position making the pain go away. Don��t just say, I��m a good doorman, Mr. Smith and I really need a job, so I��ll do a good job. Mr. Smith will have read the story of people who need jobs all day, but will still have not spoken with anyone who is there to save HIM. Instead, give Mr. Smith your nar- rative - ��Mr. Smith, I��m here to bring something special to your door. With me at your door, your resident��s life will be enhanced. I ��m a person of extreme integrity, and I promise you each of your residents will have their names remembered, they will be greeted with a smile at all times. When residents n e e d h e l p, you have my word I will gladly help them, if I hear or see something that might affect you or your residents, I will report it imme- diately. I excute my duties as I��m in- structed, and I understand that your entire brand image can ride on the back of your doorman. With me, your brand will be in safe hands. I ��m always neat and we l l g roomed, I��m always early to work and if needed I stay late. I noticed that your lobby was full with people applying for this job, but I��m your man and I can get to work at the front door and give you one less thing to worry about, starting asap. Will you let me show you what I can bring to your door and your com- pany, Mr. Smith? This is what you practice i n your mirror. A well developed narrative provides the employer with a vision of what h i s l i fe would be like with you as an employee. Your narrative is about the benefit to THE EMPLOYER/ THE COMPANY not about your need to be saved with a job. Do your research to f i n d t h e f i rms pain and develop your narrative. Your job offers will soar.

The American Youth Literacy Foundation

RESIDENT of Planet Earth and founder of The American Youth Literacy Foundation: Youth Lit, knows how to roll with the punches to get done what needs to get done in the world of youth liter- acy. Instead of wallowing in the miasma of overwhelm- ingly depressing statistics and failed initiatives within the education system, he used his experiences in teaching and learning lan- guages to formulate what became a code. The code became a curriculum. And the curriculum became an Occam��s Razor to the literacy debacle. And the swift, sharp slash of the American Youth Literacy Foundation glimmers with promise. THE CODE IS called 21E, which stands for 21st Century English. It is a very simple, 44 symbol written code that helps kids to associ- ate sounds with symbols. For example, one symbol in 21E looks like an acorn and represents any combination of letters that make the ��ay�� sound in English. So the word ��Hey�� would be depicted: H��acorn��. The 44 symbols of 21E represent all of the sounds English speakers make while speaking. The culmination of symbols is called the Phonibet and the Phonibet eliminates the difficulty children have with recognizing linguis- tic and phonetic patterns when trying to read a word, sentence or story. Although it seems coun- ter-intuitive to teach kids a sepa- rate code from the regular alpha- bet, using the Phonibet cultivates in students a critical awareness of and confidence in the sounds of our language. This sound aware- ness, (or ��Phonemic Awareness��) a precursor to ��phonics,�� is now con- sidered the core foundation for all modern, evidence-based reading curricula.

newly developed decoding process to written English. The goal of the curriculum is to tutor struggling students between the ages of five and ten to help them become able to read and com- prehend material appropriate to their grade level. The task at first seems daunting, but the curriculum of Youth Lit makes the process very simple. First, tutors are recruited from local high schools and gi- ven extensive training in the fun- damentals of literacy instruction; then they begin tutoring kids one-on-one over the duration of the school year once or twice a week for approximately fifteen to thirty minutes. The ��no force�� philosophy of the approach is to tutor students at their own pace, letting them develop passion for reading as they quickly grasp the concepts introduced to them through phonetic exercises and engaging games. Kali has taken a comple- tely grassroots approach to laun- ching this method of literacy instruction. He decided to focus on extra curricular opportunities through community outreach centers like local libraries and YMCAs that host the meetings between tutors and children. All of the tutors are volunteer high school students from within the local communities. In this way tutors who join in on the fun are usually inspired to give back to their communities while they, themselves, are aspiring students with a penchant for communica- tion and with a willingness and dedication to do the right thing. All of this information is well and good, you say, but does it work? Well, yes, and to a surprisingdegree. Since 2008 when Youth Lit launched in Ro- yersford and Norristown, PA and Burlington, NJ, the foundation has spread to fifteen satellite lo- cations between Bucks/Montgo- mery Counties including Cherry Hill, Burlington, South Brunswick, West Windsor/Plainsboro, Del- ran, NJ, and Limerick, Collegevi- lle, and Trappe, PA. Statistically speaking, the foundation deplo- yed 37 tutors during 2010-2011. Tutors work one-on-one with up to 10 students each throughout the school year. Parents make the initial decision to sign their children up and everything is free. The kids are learning, tutors are inspired, parents are happy and the system works. Youth Lit anticipates growth to up to 30 locations and 50+ tutors during the 2011-2012 school year and to over 100 locations in 2013. Speaking of Movers and Shakers for Work&Lifestyle, Kali is a perfect first example of a doer and reaps the benefits of affecting the lives of others. He spent a year in Colombia as an English instructor at the age of 19 before enlisting in the army, where he learned Arabic and served as a Spanish and Arabic translator for the 101st Airborne. He also earned his law degree at UCLA and spent 11 years in the telecommunications industry. These experiences gave him the insight and exposure to invent and develop the 21E curriculum. He��s motivated by the intrinsic need of a cultivated, rational society in which every indivi- dual has the right to participate and understand what is going on around him/her. And it starts with reading. This year, Kali is working with the Philadelphia- based children��s theater camp, YES... and C.A.M.P. to produce a ��phonemic awareness�� musical to be performed at elementary schools in the inner city. The mu- sical is based on a book, ��Happy Plaid Cats Stack Black Hats: A Phonemic Awareness Primer for K-3�� and a game, ��The 21E Secret Code Game,�� both of which were created and produced by Wood- ward and the foundation.This year, the foundation plans on opening tutoring centers in the Philadelphia city proper and is developing a distance learning, on-line training program that gi- ves potential tutors around the country the tools and informa- tion they need to open up a tu- toring center wherever they may be located. Knowledge and in- formation should be democratic and readily available; and we are in an age where now, more than ever, there is no time like the pre- sent.This year, the foundation plans on opening tutoring cen- ters in the Philadelphia city pro- per and is developing a distance learning, on-line training pro- gram that gives potential tutors around the country the tools and information they need to open up a tutoring center wherever they may be located. Knowledge and information should be de- mocratic and readily available; and we are in an age where now, more than ever, there is no time like the present.

Robyn Lewison moved from a 3500 squa- re foot home in Cherry Hill, NJ to a 1500 square foot historical apartment in Philadel- phia, near Rittenhouse Square. Surprisingly, Robyn��s space serenely combines the historic integrity of the building meanwhile expres- sing the whimsical urban flair of France and New York. The apartment is dog friendly and optimizes the entire space. Here are Robyn��s design secrets for downsizing while optimi- zing:

Storage friendly furniture. Running a paperless business from her study, Robyn commented on the importance of having pieces that function as surface and stora- ge. The small, angular rooms remain un- cluttered.
» Epiphany. Having had two decorators
visit the apartment, Robyn re-decorated the living room a few years ago starting with the ��epiphany��, in this case, the gold and cerulean pillows screaming for attention and harmonization. On the walls hang large paintings that recite soliloquies to the pillows and allow the cooler tones of the other furniture to tone down the space, transforming what she referred to as ��a very French baroque living room to an eclectic modern room.

having its share of sunny windows, the dining room, bedroom and entranceway all boast mirrors. Mirrors flirt with the light as well as add more dimension to what may otherwise seem cramped.

Robyn also learned and imple- mented the principle of flow to the apartment so each room, in combination with color, layout and flourish, serves as a part of a whole. Walking from the deep red dining room, to the pleasant yellow of the study to the blue of the living room, one immediately feels a sense of cohe- siveness and furthermore the touch of her personal aesthetic: scenes of France, lalique and Elizabeth Taylor.

Megan Coonelly misses her skinny jeans, ��they were fantastic..., just fabulous.�� Her eyes light up as she talks about her former ��go to�� hot look. From the sounds of it these jeans turned butt to booty, cured any and all self-esteem issues, and are total perfection. The problem is she can��t fit into them anymore. While spending time in Italy during college, she learned a new life style and with all the preservative-free food and walking, she came home considerably thinner: ��people didn��t recognize me.�� She loved her newfound size four clothes, and maintained the lifestyle for several years, then life got stressful. Her father was sick, and she lost her job. Staying home all day in the company of her refrigerator, and her stress eating, led her down the garden path to a 40-pound weight gain, and she is not happy. ��I look at 30- 40 extra pounds and think ��did I really let myself get like this?���� In usual form, unhealthy habits have a way of snow balling; the stress affected her workouts too. Megan no longer took her 10-mile bike rides around Kelly Drive. Megan says she now works out once a month, and nowhere near as intensively as she once did. Then there are the eating habits, Megan says she now skips breakfast, ��I know that��s so bad, and Tuna Melts kill me, I try to go for salad at lunch, but the sandwich just wins.�� Dinner now has a lot to do with pasta and pot noodles. One year ago her wardrobe was totally different, as was the effort she put into herself. �� I want to feel outside what I feel inside.�� Megan now wears clothes that fit, but her clothes don��t represent her the way they used to, ��thank god my hairdresser is so fabulous.�� So she has decided to make a change, today. Over the next 3 months Megan wants to lose 30 pounds, her weight goal is 135 pounds, and she is now 175 lbs. �� When I was in Italy, and when I was very active, I was able to lose a pound a day for quite some time, I know I can do this.�� She also says that she hopes to pass the mark of 30 lbs in weight loss, ��I like to go above and beyond.�� However, the weight gain hasn��t been all bad, ��my boobs are huge now, I have never been hit on so much.�� Cleavage aside, Megan says she is willing to do what it takes to get back into a healthy routine, �� I want to exercise effectively 5 days per week, and I am happy to try the plant based whole food diet Bruce Rogers recom- mends.�� after trying diets that border on the insane she is willing to try anything that is safe and effective. Want to change your life? You��ve found a great place to begin. Stay tuned, I will show you the results of eating a plant-based diet.
Ask 100 Americans about nutrition and at least 75 will mention ��eating in moderation�� as conducive to health. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. Just as studying in moderation produces average students and training in modera- tion produces average athletes, eating in moderation produces average health. This, however, is problematic, because average health in America entails chronic disease before the age of 60, followed by premature death. Consider the statistics:
45% of Americans live with chronic condi-
tions caused primarily by improper diet.
67% are overweight. 40% die of cardiovascular disease. 31% have high blood pressure. 20% develop cancer. 16% have high cholesterol. 15% are pre-diabetic. 10% die from cancer. 8% are diabetic.
Simply put, eating in moderation—also know as ��eating a balanced diet��—causes us to live in sickness and to die early. This, however, need not be our plight. According to science and medicine, there is a better way to eat. Consider the perspective of Harvard researcher, Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian. As, a lead researcher for the Nurses�� Health Stu- dy, Nurses�� Health Study II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, he performs more high quality nutrition research than just about any other nutrition scientist worldwide. His advice is the following. ��There are good foods and bad foods, and the advice should be to eat the good foods more and the bad foods less. The notion that it��s O.K. to eat everything in moderation is just an excuse to eat whatever you want.�� He added, ��Also untrue is the food industry��s claim that there��s no such thing as a bad food.�� In sum, eating in moderation promotes type chronic disease, including 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and obesity, as well as premature death. For the opti- mization of health and the achievement of ideal weight, we all have a choice. There exists the standard American diet which is suboptimal even if eaten in moderation or in balanced fashion, and an alternative, op- timal diet that inhibits chronic disease and promotes longevity. Health and weight are food-determined. Whatever we eat interacts, according to the laws of chemistry and physics, with our bodies�� cells, molecules and atoms. Our bo- dies are highly reactive ecosystems that are affected by everything that enters them. As a result, every bite of food that we put into our mouths is either constructive or destructive to our health. There are few, if any, neutral foods. To achieve optimal health and weight, there are good foods that we should eat without restriction and bad foods that we should severely limit or eliminate. Of course, this begs the question, ��What foods should we eat and what foods should we avoid?�� For the answer to this all-im- portant question, check this column each month, as I guide Megan Connelly, our ��Fit On My Own�� candidate, in her weight and health program to demonstrate why it really matters what we eat. Kale and Pear Smoothie
Makes 32 ounces Ingredients 1 ¼ cups seedless green grapes 1 medium or large orange (peel and re- move seeds) 1 frozen banana (split into three sections) 1 cup of freshly chopped kale 1/2 cup very, very cold water 2 cups ice cubes Instructions Place water and grapes into a high- powered blender, such as a Vitamix® or BlendTec®. Blend on high until grapes are liquefied. Grape skins won��t pulverize completely. Don��t worry if they are vis- ible. They add nice texture. Turn blender off. Add orange, pear and kale. Blend on high until liquefied. Turn blender off. Add banana. Blend until liquefied. Turn blender off. Add ice. Blend until liquefied. Drink immediately.
Swiss Chard Stew
Serve over brown rice or other grain. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients 2 pounds Swiss chard 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/8 cup vegetable broth 1 26-ounce can fire-roasted diced tomatoes 1 15-ounce can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil (or 1 teaspoon dried) Freshly ground pepper (to taste) Dash sea salt (optional) 2 cups of brown rice Instructions Put a large pot of water on to boil. Cut the large stems out of the chard and discard. Coarsely chop the chard and drop into the boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer for about 8 minutes. Remove from heat, drain in colander and set aside. Meanwhile, place the onion, garlic, and red pepper flakes in a large pot with the veg- etable broth. Cook, stirring frequently until the onion is translucent and softened. Add the tomatoes and bring to a boil. Stir in the beans, cover and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Squeeze chard to remove excess water. Then add chard to the pot along with the basil, pepper and salt. Continue to cook over low heat for another 3-4 minutes. Serve over brown rice or other whole grains.
Collard Greens
Serve with black-eyed peas and rice. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes Servings: 6-8 Ingredients 2 white onions, chopped 4 bunches collard greens, stripped from stems and cut into large pieces Olive Oil 2 Cloves of garlic chopped Instructions In a large non-stick pan, cook the onions in olive oil covered over low heat, stirring frequently. Onions should cook until they are light brown. Mix well. Add the collard greens, and two cups of water. Cook covered for 3 - 4 minutes. Add a little pepper if necessary. Serve with black-eyed peas and whole wheat pasta.

It��s time to rock the bow-tie again.
First worn by Croatian mercenaries as a scarf tied around the neck to hold together the top openings of a man��s shirt, the bow-tie was coup-ted by the French upper class, and were called Cravets around the necks of the French elite throughout the 18th century. And bow- ties did not get beat out by the neck tie until well into the 19th century. There is mixed opinion among bow- tie wea- rers as to the meaning of their choice of a bow tie over a neck tie – some think it is a sign of conservatism, while others think it is a sign of boldness and intelligence. Lately, the bow-tie has been making a comeback in settings such as dinner and cocktail parties, and among legal and money management types. Expect a splash of bow-ties to appear in fas- hion this fall. 1. Start with end in right hand extending 1�� below that in left hand. 2. Cross the longer end over the short end then pass it back and up through the loop making a loose overhand knot. Tighten the knot so it fits snugly around your neck. 3. Fold the lower hanging end up and to the left. Make sure the unfolded end is unhanging down over the front of the bow. 4. Pull the bow ends forward and gently squeeze them together, forming an opening behind them. Now, turn to the right and notice the opening you have created. .
How To Tie A Bow-Tie
5. With your left thumb or forefinger, push the middle part of the tie with your finger through the opening from left to right, taking care not to let the end of the tie pass all the way through the opening. Use your right hand to help pull the back loop through. 6. Your bow tie will be uneven at this point. Pull the loop ends to tighten the bow. This is where your personal touch comes in. You can make a small knot or large knot. To take your bow tie off, simply pull one of the ends.

If roses are $20 per bouquet, why not spend as much on some steak? And if he��s not keen on meat, substitution with the makings of his favorite fish or vegetarian dish is easy.
03. At the end of the day, offer him a back rub
without asking for one in return. In this day and age both members of a couple usually need a backrub after a hard Monday or on Friday after a whole week of work, and often, couples only give back rubs if one promises the other they can get one too. Nothing pro- motes love like unselfishness. So give him a nice massage and make it all about him, and he��ll be able to relax even more – if you��ve chosen the right man he��ll want to return the favor tomorrow anyways and it��ll lead to great sex.
04. Have a sexy photo taken of your self,
and hide it somewhere he will find it. A lot of women these days are getting boudoir photos taken of themselves – it��s fun, makes you feel sexy, and serves as a great present for you man. If he��s never mentioned a fantasy or desire, look online or in your local bookstore��s Romance/Sex section for some inspiration – you will surely find it. Sarah��s the long term in mind for what wants out of her work and when ot to the subject of relocating for ver, she made it explicit that she ld as long as it didn��t interfere with areer. rah��s been all over and her favor- lace in the world is Turkey, giving ins and outs of what it��s like being eligiously and historically dynamic e and that the people of Turkey are no others, and that then men are rently quite attractive(sliding in ils about the bathhouses). rther on, we got to the kinks, or the quirks, or the things that make you smirk and smile when you meet a life loving personality: her passion for the game ��Settlers of Catan�� touch- ing upon her competitive nature and analytic way of thinking, from studying statistics to what she likes about guys with senses of humor and confidence which seem to go hand in hand. Sarah has a fondness for boots of all types and is looking for a place in Philadelphia where you can dance to Top 40 without running into a bunch of maurading college bozos. Another thing that struck a chord with me is that she��s respectful in the highest de- gree. We got to a point talking about dating scenarios in which she said that if she knew the date wasn��t going any- where, she wouldn��t waste a guy��s time pretending that she was interested if she wasn��t to save face. She knows that time is valuable. Did we mention that she has a moun- tain? Hem hem, has a favorite one (Kick- ing Horse) anyway that she��s developed a fondness for while snowboarding, another passion of hers. When it comes to life, Sarah knows what she wants and is flexible and openminded to try different ways at getting it, a great as- set in the dating world. Healthy alternatives to an awkward first dinner date.
Consider rock climbing. It��s a new phenomenon for outdoor hobbyists and gives you a great opportunity to see if she��s independent or likes a little help, if she likes new challenges or, if she��d rather stick to something grounded. Talking won��t be forced like it can be at dinner. You��ll be oc- cupied, so you��ll talk when you want, and it��ll be about things that matter. Plus, it��s a great time to measure up Alternative? Go kart racing! Most go kart tracks around the Philadel- phia area also offer a mini-golf cour- se and sometimes a batting cage. If you plan to go kart and things are going well, you can always extend the date to other activities. 2nd date option: Throw a BBQ. You can introduce her to friends in a re- laxed setting. Maybe ask her to bring something small�� a dessert? You can share it later when the crowd leaves and work on your next first! Take a walk around Old Town, or a young city close to you. Most small towns will have at least a mom and pop book store. If the next closest thing is a Barnes and Noble, go for it! But stop at their Starbucks Caf�� for a little something while you browse. Try to venture to a seating area whe- re you can talk about what you��re reading too. Alternative? Visit a local universi- ty with history in the campus. Sta- tuesque archways and beautiful cathedral buildings offer a great conversation point and you won��t be bothered by tons of sight seers�� you might even learn something new. 2nd date option:Spend a few hours in a museum. Other people will be there, but it gives you an opportu- nity to make your first statement: hand holding in public. The exception to the anti-dinner rule��Hibachi! It��s an entertaining and irresistibly delicious winner-din- ner for Chinese and Japanese cuisi- ne fans. Most Hibachi restaurants are also Sushi houses, so you can try some new sushi too. Plus, it��s not a one on one environment. Other couples and families are sitting at the table with you. If your chef��s not that great a performer and your date��s not that a great a talker, you can always rely on people watching! Not to mention the food and drinks are always chatter worthy. Alternative? Research your local foodie clubs and attend one of their cooking classes together. You��ll learn how to make a full meal (maybe a fu- ture one) while also taking note on how well your date can follow a reci- pe, or just enjoy yours! 2nd date option: Break out an old family recipe book and whip up the first meal you open to. Chances are, you haven��t made it before, so it��ll be new and exciting for you and your date.

First dates are always stressful. You plan for days, practice talking for hours before, and we ladies take a week just to find clothes for it. There is an old saying, ��The man is the head and the woman is the neck.�� This quote has been circulating in various forms for gene- rations, and was once again popularized by ��My Big Fat Greek Wedding.�� It origins, like so many things, is China, look under the heading adages/proverbs. An adage is defined as a sa- ying in metaphorical form, which embodies a common observation. The fact that this ob- servation is still prevalent is interesting, but if you look around it is a statistical fact that men are still in control of the ��head��. Head of State, Head Executive, Head Negotiator, Head Hon- cho, you get the picture. Now before the fe- minist spears come through the woods at me, let me say I get no comfort from this statistical fact. And perhaps behind it all the neck is tur- ning the head, but that power is not quanti- fied or shown in bar graphs. Historically women have been obliged to fight, socially or otherwise, to openly share their minds, gain their rights, and keep their heads (literally and figuratively) given that so much has been, and still is, masculine do- minated. However, men with power have in many historical instances been smart enough to choose a woman who transcends whatever socio/cultural shackles were in fashion at the time. The head is aware of the absolute need for a neck, and vice versa. But let me go back to the beginning. This thought process came to me upon the introduction of a new section to Working and Life Style Magazine, ��Gold Diggers Monthly.�� A section based around the notion of women finding a worthy partner, or to put it more di- rectly, an exceptional, wealthy, and powerful partner, or dare I say it ��a head��. The term ��Gold Digger�� comes with a particularly nasty set of associations for women, but I decided to go in with an open mind, and not be constricted by Kayne West��s definition.

I started to ponder the idea, that when it comes to partners perhaps we are all dig- ging for gold. Intellect, power (in its various forms), attractiveness, charisma, monetary wealth, and security are all things that are on the usual list of desired qualities, and every one of these qualities has been developed and used as a social currency. I started with the group of people who historically have had the run of the play- ground, power and wealth at their disposal, namely kings. And I found that women in various time periods, while relegated to the role of the ��neck��, managed to strike an incredible relationship with their ��head��. While many ��heads�� were transformed by their relationship with the ��neck��. In typical Cool and Cultured form I decided take a lesson from history, in this case royal history, to look for the original blue print of the power couple. It seems that if a redefinition is to occur for the term ��Gold Digger�� then the wrong ��headed�� thinking attached to the term has to be eliminated by some substantial means.

Showing that this recent definition has little historical standing seems the Cool and Cultured way to do this. In 1591 Gabrielle D��Estrees became the mistress of Henry IV of France. During her time with Henry, Gabrielle was made a marquise (Marquise de Monceaux), a duchess (Duchesse de Beaufort), a member of the King��s Council, and given gifts that would make the modern mind boggle. In addition to large estates, jewels of incalculable worth, a royal crest and authority, there were more personal gifts; Henry gifted Gabrielle with his Coronation ring in March 1599, which she is thought to hold in the portrait of her and her sister. Gabrielle is pictured above on the right. All this sounds pretty sweet for Gabrielle, and it seems to be Gold Digging in its purest and most profitable form. The most power- ful man in his country offering gifts, social and financial standing to the woman who was able to gain his attention. But like a head needs a neck, Henry needed Gabrielle just as much as she needed him. At the start of his royal career Henry IV was under siege from the Catholic League, and was engaged in several wars throughout his reign. Henry inherited a very tense political and religious state, often requiring him to fight and quell rebellion due to religious dispute. Gabrielle accompanied him on cam- paign, even when heavily pregnant; staying close to the line, in Henry��s tent, writing his war correspondence while he was in the field. In one famous incident she stayed on the battlefield as the French line fell back, and the Austrian army advanced, shouting to the French troops to stand and fight, Henry was forced to have her thrown over a horse and taken to the back of the camp. Gabrielle used her substantial charm to influence and negotiate on Henry��s behalf, as she did in 1598 after Henry issued the Edict of Nantes. Henry issued the edict in April 1598 in order to separate civil and religious matters within France, granting opposed religions (Catho- lic and Protestant) the freedom and safety necessary to practice their beliefs, while living in tolerance and peace. Initially, brokering a deal between the powerful Catholic and Huguenot (French Protestants) factions see- med impossible; the differences of religious belief ran deep during this time, and the bloodshed was extensive; religious burnings and scalping, civil unrest, and prosecution were rampant. Gabrielle helped to restore peace, her methods were not war, but finesse, she stopped violence between the parties by contracting marriages between the children of warring houses, as well as spelling out the benefits of the new edict. Gabrielle died in April 1599, only a few days before her coro nation as Queen of France. Henry mourned openly, and became this first French King to wear black in mourning, as opposed to the usual purple (the color of royalty), to wear black was to mourn as a common man. Henry buried Gabrielle in Paris, with all the pomp and circumstance that her love and loyalty had inspired. It seems the head felt adrift without the neck that had held it up for so long. I chose this morsel of history and this cou- ple in particular, because it seems to flip the notion of gold digging on its head, rendering it such a simplistic and incomplete picture of what can happen when men and women come together in love and power. Yes, it is true that a beautiful woman met a powerful man and gained all that he could offer as head of the monarchy. But beyond all that, they created a synergistic and complimentary affair that benefitted both parties. It paints a picture of power coupling that is meritocra- tic; it was a good deal in both the business and personal aspects. Gabrielle and Henry are one of many couples who managed to strike this balance. The women who kept company with Kings have always been in a class all their own. Among this class are some of history��s most brilliant minds, beauties, politicians, and wits, and in some cases all of the above. Reaping the benefits of social standing, and being the recipient of material displays of love and regard, has in past ages, been viewed as a tribute to the qualities of the recipient, rather than a product of ��Gold Digging��. It was only through being exceptional that they were able to gain and hold their positions. Social prowess, exceptional intellect and edu- cation, the ability to set cultural and social trend, knowledge of the arts, and being savvy in the flow of politics and government, and simply being great company, were the bread and butter of this class of women. This is the tradi- tion/state we must return to. The modern woman, man, and cou- ple can take a huge lesson from such history. A head needs a neck (which position you hold is secondary), and we are all gold diggers. We are looking for our support system, we are digging for someone who will stand on the line and fight with us. Argue on our behalf, and who allows us to take part in all that they have created. This comes with incredible reward, and incre- dible sacrifice. To have the gifts and not the relationship is to have nothing at all, but to have both is to have everything. We are the generation that wants everything. We must take note of the amount of personal development it takes to make such a powerful couple succeed. Any section that will help one to create the sense of self neces- sary, and help in the self development, so that the cup of social currency overflows, can get my readership. Plus they know today��s kings.

arTisT, lightfoot is con- cerned with and inspired by exploring the liminal space between dreamtime and wakefulness, mixing the imagery of the deer mount trophy with a painting technique that is reminiscent of the dot painting style of aborig- inal art. for lightfoot, the deer mount has been a symbol present in her own dreams for years now, and through the incorporation of dot painting, she creates sculp- tures which stand as relics of her dreamtime. The besT way to describe lightfoot��s work is ��painted sculpture��. using the models that taxidermists stretch and shape deer head mounts on for hunting trophies, lightfoot alters and paints them, giving each head it��s own identity. The mounts are also adorned with real salvaged deer horns and a pair of glass eyes originally made for horses. The look of lightfoot��s sculptures are evidence of her life- long passion for design and the aesthetics of color.

One of the most infamous, seminal moments
in art history occurred 1917, when a factory made urinal was placed on a pedestal and called art. This piece has gone down in history because it encap- sulates the radical changes in style and dogma that occurred in and about art during the early 20th cen- tury. With Modernism very much still inchoate, this period was a time of great upheaval and change in the art world. During this time, the ��Fountain�� urinal piece was considered not only ludicrous but enra- ging to most critics – and this is exactly what Dadaist Marcel Duchamp wanted. Dadaism, (as an offshoot movement of Moder- nism) emerged concurrently with the beginning of World War I, and was concerned primarily with the breaking down of political, cultural and artistic con- ventions prevailing at the time, which by Dadaists were considered outmoded. When spoken about, Dadaism is often described in terms of ��anti��s – Da- daists were anti-war, anti-bourgeois, anti-standards, anti-hegemony, anti-art, ant-etc. Being such an oppositional movement, many critics at the time saw Dadaism merely as an antagonistic annoyance rather than a movement revealing a real need for revamping of aesthetic standards, and the works produced across visual arts, literature and theater were often not well-received, if received at all. No- netheless, Dadaism ended up laying the ground- work for many movements which proceeded it, including the avant-guarde movement, surrealism, pop art, fluxus, and postmodernism.

The Fountain
For visual art Dadaism, the main concern lied within going against the aesthetic values of the time, and this was expressed through exploration of new subject matters and new mediums. Collages, assemblages, photo- montages and ��readymades�� were all novel mediums artists began to work in. Although these mediums may be familiar to us now, during this time in the art world, in which bronze equestrian statues and portraits predominated the visual field, this change in material, method and subject matter was considered extremely radical. Gaining momentum in various European cities including Zurich, Berlin and Paris, Da- daism in New York was also burgeoning bet- ween 1915 and 1922, in part due to the inf- lux of impassioned creative energy brought over by European artists taking refuge from the war. Along with Francis Picabia, Man Ray, and Elsa von Freytag-Loringhovenone, Mar- cel Duchamp was one of the most important founders of New York Dada movement. Du- champ is the father of the above-mentioned ��readymades��, which are defined as factory made objects that become art through artist appropriation. Duchamp��s ��Fountain�� is per- haps his most famous piece made during the height of Dadaism, and was so controversial during the time that it was denied open-en- try exhibition on multiple occasions. In making ��anti-art��, and going against all conventional aesthetic norms, the Dadaists essentially raised the question of, ��What is art?�� Throughout most of history up to this point, art had always been something enti- rely made by the artist, and were demons- trative of skill and tradition. How does one grabble with Michelangelo��s ��David��, and a factory urinal on a pedestal, standing equally as examples of sculpture? Dadaism helped to redefine the boundaries of art by expanding them beyond any foreseeable scope, putting an emphasis on the artist��s intention. A urinal became art because Duchamp intended it to be – and it took roughly 40 years before this idea of the intention of the artist being just as important, if not more, than the end product, to really take hold in the art world. Like with all great art, the meaning of the ��Fountain�� is still up for debate, and in the end, is for the audience to decide.

Amongst the living.
I call them ��Norm-Os��. They wander around in whispers; talking in small steps. They cry over onion powder, and get passionate about scenes on a screen. It keeps life safe; it keeps life easy. It keeps life away. Like Blade, I consider myself ��A Day Walker.�� I can walk with those who are physical normal, but I cannot walk like them. Functionally disabled, I am invisibly ill and internally tortured. The people I love have no understanding of how much I really suffer, or what real suffering is even like. And because they love me too, they do not think about it. My boy- friend explained to me once: ��It��s not that we don��t care about what you��re going through. We treat you like a normal person because we want to think of you as one. It��s because we don��t want to pity you.�� I told him I was not looking for pity. I was looking for understanding. While ignorance is bliss, it is also dangerous. When someone has a medical condition, every aspect of life must be reassessed and adjusted. I require constant assistance, so all of life��s little ��to do��s�� become com- plex ��how do I do��s?��. I must get a shopping cart to purchase a single item from the grocery store. I use it for balance, and holding onto any object over 3lbs causes the room to start spinning. While I��m forcing all my efforts and concentration into staying upright, working through the world-warps and neuropathic lightening with a pleasant composure, he��s getting angry because we��re taking too long in there.
His autopilot gorilla-reflexes make him push the cart (that I cannot push by my- self due to nerve weakness) faster to effi- ciently get the task at hand done. His goal is to get groceries; my goal is to stay alive. A sharp turn almost causes me to fall. He does not understand why I��m crying. The Posterior-Fossa decompression surgery I had done involved the removal of the back of my skull, without a prosthetic covering replacement. One fall could easily be the end of my life. Society is junk food for the soul. So many words are being wasted; people spend terminable-time talking about who Sally shouldn��t be seeing because she��s too im- mature for them. They have domesticated their desires; love is a measure of practical convenience and ��less than three�� symbols in a text message. A simple head-cold can freeze up the entire day. People should grow their souls up, and not hang down by such feeble ropes.

��Why can��t you be happy?�� : My father��s words to me I was being taken away to a crisis center for post traumatic stress. I had mutalated the area under- neath my mandible with a kitchen knife. I could not open my mouth more than half an inch because of an experimental cranio-cervical fusion surgery where my skull was fixed solid into place with tita- nium, accidentally downwards. I could no longer sing, or eat three-dimensional food. I convinced the psychiatrist that I was not trying to kill myself: ��If I really wanted to die, all I��d have to do is push on the back of my head. I have constant vertigo, so if you see me standing, you know I��m trying my best to stay in this world.�� After that explanation, he did not try to diagnose me as ��depressed�� or force feed me Prozac. He refe- rred to me as ��The Enigma��, and my story became a therapeutic device for others in the ward who were struggling with problems that they had the power to correct and control. That is the difference bet- ween struggling and suffering: you struggle from alcoholism, you suffer from cancer. After sharing my story, one guy in the group stood up and exclai- med: ��Wow, my problems are BULLSHIT!��
��Shallow are thy gallows, self-sentenced on a silly-string noose.�� Will is powered by positive thinking. Those thoughts do not have to be grandeous credences: ��God is Good�� ��Love life no matter what��, ��I��ll get better someday��, in fact, it��s worse to think like that because big ideas will set you up for even bigger di- sappointments. Worship the small; make grand what is normally taken for granted. We recently did an acoustic set with our band that did not have as big crowd turnout as hoped for, or a tur- nout at all for that matter. My boyfriend, also my guitarist, was ashamed to be playing to an almost empty space. We were out- side, the weather was sun soaked and enchantingly aestival. I hit every note, and didn��t slip on a single word despite my head was pounding and I lacked the strength to stand. I was delighted to sing to the sky; it took my mind off the pain, and what greater audience than the universe? (Plus the event��s beverage refresh- ments were complimentary). My boyfriend was so upset it had altered his work schedule that he did not wish to be around me for the rest of the night. I am grateful for every opportunity on this earth, and thankful that that was not our last night on it. I am also thankful for the next morning apology letter and packa- ge of gummy peach rings. Emotions cause a motion. If what you are feeling does not carry you forward, then go on without it. Do not get angry that the car in front of you is going five miles under the speed limit. Do not get angry that the person behind you is violently honking because they don��t know you just had your neck surgically frac- tured and cannot handle the road bumps. Do not get angry at your disabled roommate because she has a hard time picking up after herself. Do not get angry at your able-bodied roommates because they do not understand how hard it is for you, and are just trying to keep a good household. Do not get angry at your parents who care, but do not know how to. Do not get angry at the world that just doesn��t know. Get angry at the disease. Get angry at life��and let it have it with every fighting swing. Love those who do not understand you, and understand that they do love you too. As for the Norm-Os; no life is never without tragedy, no life is ever without reality. That guy on your street in the Phillies jersey that��s shouting about the game score and talking in pizza top- pings might have had his wife just diagnosed with multiple scle- rosis. He might even wander out into the street and get hit by a car. Those around might feel something for it, but since their emotions do not carry them forward, they move on to square pepperoni and Sally��s new girlfriend. But I will not. And I will move forward with the truth. We are only meant for moments. Life is a sketch-book, so we must draw our plans in pencil to allow mistakes to be made. The- re is nothing more frightening than change, and nothing more inevitable.

I��ve heard it said that you can marry more money in a minute than you can earn in a lifetime. For some women, this is a cheeky adage whose truth can be appreciated. For others, it is a guiding relationship principle and raison d����tre: it drives their hunt for the wealthy – and hopefully most generous – man. Whether love is an ultimate component of the match is another matter; in fact it may be altogether unimportant. Most smart women will agree that accounting for wealth, prestige, and stability is a smart calculation. All else being equal, the man with these aforementioned traits – and resources – trumps the competition. But if these pieces are part of the equation to such a degree that they are on level footing with, or even supersede, love, faithfulness, and longevity, then an elevated degree of engagement must be implemented to achieve a woman��s stated goals. A successful relationship looks very much like a successful business, and every facet of romantic relationship manage- ment that I examine reaffirms this hypothesis. There exists compromise, negotiation, transaction, merger, and acquisi- tion. While not the sexiest of metaphors, it seems the most apt. Which brings this columnist to her next assertion: get- ting a wealthy man to sleep with you is one thing. Allowing the relationship to blossom to the point that you become a partner in the business of his life is another.

After all, those individuals engaging in the business activities listed above are: A) leaders; and B) given the op- portunity to perform such functions as a result of their proven fortitude and savvy. So it stands to reason that the successful gold digger must pro- ve much of the same. Needless to say, to run a successful business, there are a thousand calcu- lations to be made and even more strategies and plans to be executed. Enter this column, which aims to assist its readers in developing the win/win strategies that lead to strong emotio- nal bonds, high-trust environments, mutual respect, financial and emotio- nal growth – for both parties – and, occasionally, true love and marriage. Work & Lifestyle��s publisher once told me, ��one must be before one can do, and do before one can have.�� At the time, I did not understand the adage fully. Having since grasped it, I find it applies to the modern gold digger perfectly: she must become what she wishes to possess. How can she otherwise expect to understand the man she has successfully ensnared and benefit from his success, resour- ces, and character? In the same vein, a woman cannot be one kind of human being and a di- fferent type of romantic partner. Dis- honest and manipulative people are dishonest and manipulative within their relationships. Similarly, intelli- gent, genuine, self-aware, and polis- hed individuals display those traits inside and outside their romantic couplings. You will continually hear this column assert that bad deals always come un- done, be they in business or personal pairings. Savvy gold diggers do their best to avoid them, keeping in mind that successful business eliminates the frivolous and failing and retains the profitable and value adding, read the indispensable. The successful gold digger is the latter. If she wants a piece of a lucrative deal, she utilizes her current assets and develops new ones. And a good deal is not necessa- rily one that lasts forever: some of the best are short-lived and dissolve at a pre-determined date. I hesitated to defend my use of the term ��gold digger�� at this article��s outset. Instead of initially stating that it was a perfectly reasonable and res- pectable state of being, I wanted to paint a picture of the gold digger as I see her. (And she looks nothing like the infamous digger of the 2005 Kan- ye West song.) She is sexy, powerful, and practical enough to know that some average Joe is not going to cut it as a partner, be it life or other. And she is sufficiently intelligent and pragmatic to know that bad deals arise from a lack of reciprocity and an unmitigated feeling of entitle- ment. Gold Digger��s Monthly will do everything in its power to help the practicing and aspiring gold digger avoid these fatal errors and become the type of woman that her type of man perpetually craves. To get another view of the island, try parasailing. Walk along Grace Bay or talk to your concierge and you can easily take a group trip that lasts an hour and a half to two hours. If you go through Sky Pilot Parasail you will spend about twenty minutes in the sky (tandem is an option) and it will be $75 per person. There have been rumors you can get it for $60 if you speak to Captain Jerry, but I��ll leave that up to you. One way to get around the islands and avoid expen- sive cab rides is to rent a car or scooter. Because gas is over six dollars a gallon on this island, scooters may be your best bet. Check out Caicos Wheels, located on Grace Bay Road. This little rental shop has a friendly staff who are there when you need them. Believe me, if your fan belt snaps on the side of Leeward highway, you��ll be happy to know they will be there to pick you up (I speak from experience). While you have the wheels, take a drive out to the Havana Club, located at the Windsong Resort. With a differ- ent show every night of the week, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the better nights, catering to a ��mature�� audi- ence. You never know what the show will bring, but you can count on great service. The staff here is exceptionally friendly and want to make sure you have a great time! Whether you��re staying at an all-inclusive, or providing your own food, Lemon Cafe is a must. You won��t be disap- pointed when you try a bite of the cucumber salad with pickled radish and fresh mint. If doing a tapas-style dinner, the calamari is grilled to perfection and stuffed with harrissa spiced beef, olives and basmati rice.

Another restaurant to try while out is Da Conch Shack. If you want to try conch, Turks and Caicos�� specialty, this is the place. Boasting the freshest seafood in town and an upbeat atmosphere, Da Conch Shack is a great dinner spot. If you��re staying on Grace Bay it will require a car, but the trip is worth it. Whether you��re looking to get away for next to nothing, or have cash to spend on a fancy resort, you can book your trip through Apple Vaca- tions, America��s number one tour operator. Beer is composed of four main ingredients:
1. Barley – Ranging in shade from light to dark,
and in flavor from sweet to roasty (or even smoky), malted barley is greatly responsible for the color, tex- ture and intensity of a beer.
2. Hops – Hops are aromatic, green, coned
flowers boasting an array of characteristics depending on origin. German hops tend to be herbal; English fruity and earthy, and our native flowers evoke piney, almost grapefruit-like notes. Germany, England, New Zealand, Czech, Bohemia, the US ...hops are harvested across the globe.
3. Yeast - responsible for turning the sugar into
alcohol. Amen.
4. Water – Approximately 90% of beer is water,
so it is critical for brewers to keep a close watch on the supply��s mineral levels. Water composition can be altered to suit a particular style; softer water content works best for lighter styles while harder water is favo- red for darker, more robust styles.
But how does it happen, you ask?
The Art of Brewing - Here are twelve key steps to illus- trate - in laments terms - the science of beer. 1.
Malting– Raw barley is sprouted and then kiln-
dried to create malt. This process is usually performed by a purveyor and then sent on its way to a brewery. 2.
Milling – Grains (mostly malted barley mentio-
ned above but wheat, rye, rice, and corn are used as well) are ground into grist to enable the future extrac- tion of essential sugars.
3.
Mashing – The grist travels to the mash tun
where it is soaked in water and heated to activate the conversion of starches to sugars. (Think oatmeal). Huge rollers ��mash�� the mixture. 4.
Lautering – Heat is increased again as more
hot water is added. This time, the water is strained, ta- king the sugars along with it. The sweet solution, ca- lled wort, is transferred to the brew kettle. 5.
Boiling – The wort is boiled anywhere from 1
to 2.5 hours. Hops are added at various intervals du- ring this process. Bittering hops added at the begin- ning; finishing hops for aroma added towards the end. 6.
Whirlpool – Just like it sounds. The wort is
whirled above a funnel and the grain husks and hop remnants are captured while the liquid passes through onto the cooling stage. 7.
Cooling – Wort travels through a heat exchan-
ger where it is cooled to an appropriate temperate for yeast to ferment. 8.
Pitchin�� –In the fermentation tank, yeast is
added to the wort. 9.
Fermentation – The yeast ferments and con-
verts the sugars of the sweet wort to alcohol and CO2 – the natural effervescence! Beer is born. 10.
Filtering, Carbonation – Beer may be filtered to
remove traces of yeast and additional carbon dioxide may be added to boost carbonation before bottling or serving. 11.
Beer travels to holding tanks in preparation for
your glass, or bottling or canning lines. 12. Enjoy! ####
