Dr. Chans research interests focus on characterizing complexity
and quantifying uncertainty in environmental systems with the
goal of improving our understanding of these systems and our
ability to forecast their variability. His current research interests
focus on river mechanics and geomorphology and environmental
hydraulics.
As for his current research project (cooperation with Prof. Su-
Chin Chen), it is aimed to understand the flow patterns (mean
flow and turbulent flow) and the sediment movement around
vegetative patches. The goals of this study are to examine the
key flow and to explain its effect on morphological changes.
Dr. Hsun-Chuan Chan is a new
faculty member of our University.
He focuses on the application of
limited in situ data and the
numerical simulation of
environmental system.

Dr. Chaos research interests are plant ecology, tropical
vegetation ecology, forest dynamics, plant functional groups, and
carbon budgets. For her postgraduate study, she specialized in
studying tree death in Amazonia, including predictors of tree
mortality, mechanisms of tree mortality, stocks of necromass,
and the significance of tree death in Forest carbon/nutrient cycles,
structure, composition, and dynamics.
As for her current research project, it is aimed to understand the
forest dynamic patterns (growth, mortality, and regeneration) of
the lowland rainforests in the tropical Taiwan (Nanjenshan
Reserve, Kenting National Park)
Dr. Kuo-Jung Chao did her
Ph.D. dissertation study in the
Amazonian area, which is a
very unique experience for any
forest biologists.

Research in Dr. Chens laboratory is focused on the study of
insect physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology using bio-
techniques. The main part of her research is working on finding
novel genes and their expression regulation related to the insect
reproduction. This will result in the development of new methods
to control the pest. Currently, the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera
dorsalis (Hendel)) is the major studied species.

Dr. Jiangs research interests are centered around forest genetics, tree
breeding, and conservation biology. He is particularly interested in exploring
the genetic mechanism of resistance of China fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata)
to a fungal pathogen, which shows horizontal resistance. Another research
project he involved is to initiate flowering in potted seed orchard of Taiwan
incense cedar (Calocedrus formosana). His research program also includes
studies of exploring and developing potential models for ecological agriculture.
Since Dr. Jiang has been actively involved in pushing the internationalization
of the College, he recently initiated a study of indicators of internationalizing
agricultural universities.
Dr. Jiang welcomes people who are interested in studying the above-
mentioned topics to contact him. Dr. Jiang was awarded the Outstanding

Dr. Roans research interests focuses on building and validation of simulation
model for growth and reproduction of Taiwan livestock and poultry, application
of expert system on animal production, and decision support system of animal
production.
Dr. Roans laboratory had done so many research projects, such as the
determination of the economical scale of pig farms in Taiwan, the usage of
microcomputers in ration formulation and daily accounts of ranch, bio-
economic models for the simulation of the growing pigs, sows and broiler, a
computer simulation model for the optimum market weight of the growing pigs,
decision support system for sow replacement and dairy cattle culling.
In the past 10 years, Dr. Roans research works are transferred to online
systems, he has developed more than 20 online software, such as expert
system on animal diseases, decision support system on pig house design and
waste water treatment, and simulation modeling of pig growth and sows
reproduction.
Dr. Roan is the first researcher
who works on the integration with
Animal Science and information in
Taiwan. He developed many
software running on website.
The farmers could run the system
wherever they are online.

Dr. Shens research interests are environmental microbiology and
biotechnology, especially focusing on molecular detection, classification
and identification of bacteria. In the past Dr. Shen has developed
several primers specific for the detection of environmentally important
bacteria. The culture-dependent approach and culture-independent
approach is used in parallel to study the microbial diversity in various
ecosystems. By conducting evolutionary genes and functional genes
present in oil degrading genus Gordonia, Dr. Shen drew the
phylogenetic relationship of Gordonia species and proposed several
novel indigenous bacteria from Taiwan. The future works will be the
characterization of plant growth promoting bacteria and hydrocarbon
degrading bacteria from academic and applied aspects.

Dr. Wangs research interests cover two model crops, rice
(monocot) and soybean (dicot). In rice, he developed two
mutation pools for TNG67 and IR64 varieties using sodium azide
mutagenesis. Mutants are studied from phenotype screening to
genotype identification using genetic, genomic, and proteomic
approaches to discover functional genes and markers for variety
improvement through genomic selection and/or transgenesis.
Flavonoid biosynthetic genes cloned from black seedcoat are
applied in metabolic engineering to develop new flower color for
phalaenopsis, chrysanthemum and poinsettia, and to add new
pathway to rice grain for producing new valuable compounds.
