(Please note that these are for DDS staff only):
The Introduction to DDS and State Service provides a forum to introduce new employees to the Department, making them feel welcomed and valued. It is an opportunity to familiarize employees with the Department’s history, mission, values and culture the focus is how each employee, regardless of job title, contributes to the Mission of the Department.
The Overview/Introduction sets the tone for the Orientation Program by reviewing the Mission of the Department, making clear the basic principles of public service and stewardship, and the importance of striving for the reality of people with Developmental Disabilities leading meaningful lives.
In our work, we handle information that is personal to the people supported by the Department. Whether this information is written or oral we are responsible for protecting it. This presentation will inform staff of their responsibility to protect the privacy of the individual by limiting access to personal health information and personal information. Fulfilling confidentiality responsibilities supports the Department’s Mission. This includes the 504 Executive order regarding security
In every part of the organization, people’s ability to perform their job responsibilities depends in part on their ability to communicate effectively as a member of a team, or perhaps several teams. Teams may be formal or informal, standing or temporary but in all cases, relationships, collaboration, communication, team learning, and effectively dealing with differences and conflict are essential. This session will focus on the importance of communication between teams in the DDS system with regard to fostering a learning environment.
A section of this session will also focus on supervision. Not only is it important for employees to be familiar with the performance appraisal system that will be used to evaluate them (EPRS or ACES, which is covered by Human Resources) but supervision should also be a source of coaching, teaching, mentoring, and support to the employee. While the Department continues to focus on the development of supervisors, it is also valuable to teach employees how to proactively use supervision as a resource for their professional development and on-the-job learning.
This segment is designed to provide a general overview of Developmental Disabilities and developmental disabilities, including the definition of Developmental Disabilities currently used by DDS, prevalence of Developmental Disabilities, a brief overview of causes of Developmental Disabilities, and the learning potential of people with Developmental Disabilities. The focus of this class is to emphasize the importance of valuing people with Developmental Disabilities while promoting the Department’s Mission. The emphasis throughout will be on creating positive, constructive learning environments that enhance learning potential and outcomes of people supported by DDS. The focus is on what’s possible and the capacities of people with Developmental Disabilities.
A Life like Any Other 3 Hours
As new employees come to work it is important for them to know the Department exists to support people with Developmental Disabilities or developmental disabilities to create opportunities to have a life like anyone else. To understand this, employees need to recognize that historically people with disabilities have not been treated equally and in fact have been relegated to a very low social value in our society. People with disabilities have been seen, not as a whole person, but someone who needed to be cared for. Today, we understand that people with disabilities have hopes, dreams and desires to succeed. They are just like us.
As Department employees, we have a unique opportunity to enhance the socially valued roles of people with Developmental Disabilities. We also recognize that we represent the people served by the Department when we speak about our work to family, friends, and neighbors.
Basic constitutional rights protect each and every person living in the United States. It is essential that public employees understand these rights for themselves and in their work supporting people with Developmental Disabilities. The purpose of this overview is to assure that people’s rights are protected and if not, what to do. Historically, people with Developmental Disabilities have been denied many rights. As DDS employees we have a responsibility to support people in a dignified and respectful way.
Increasingly, we work within a more diverse, multicultural workplace. Those we work with and those persons with disabilities we support come from and offer the benefit of growing up and living within diverse cultures. This class is designed to underscore this reality, define diversity, increase awareness of and respect for diversity, introduce new employees to the dynamics of stereotyping and its impact on our interactions with others, and offer practical suggestions to support professional behavior practices within the DDS workplace environment. The framework of this class is DDS’s Diversity Vision and Plan.

MAKING PUREED FOODS MORE APPEALING
An Introduction to the Art of Pureeing foods
Typical serving of pureed foods Pureed, styled ravioli Pureed styledchicken and peas
Most of us enjoy eating. It’s one of the great pleasures of life. When disease processes or physical changes hamper a person’s ability to safely swallow regular textured food then people are frequently put on a texturized diet such as chopped, ground, or pureed. Being on a texturized diet can be a challenge. Much of the enjoyment of eating has been greatly diminished. However, there are ways to restore much of the pleasure of eating if we analyze where that enjoyment comes from and make sure we are paying attention to the components that we can affect.
When food is texturized it also loses much of the visual appeal it initially had. Color is often diminished. The shape of the food has been altered. The flavor of the food may be altered, and too often the food is presented with no regard to how it appears (plating). The temperature of the food item is generally uniform throughout with no variety. It’s unfortunate that these elements are compromised because they are the very things that provide variety and make eating enjoyable in the first place.
This training will introduce you to techniques that add interest to pureed foods with a reasonable amount of time and effort involved. Molding, piping, shaping, coloring, and glazing will be discussed. Materials and supplies will be discussed. At the end of the training you should understand the basic principles of making pureed foods appealing and you will be able to create pureed meals that are more appealing than what is typically served.

Introduction to the iPad
The iPad has proven to be a game changer when used with our population. The size of the device, touch screen access, and affordability make it an incredibly powerful and flexible tool.
This training will assume that the participants know nothing about the iPad and will start with how to turn it on. From there we will review how to use the device in a general sense and will move on to more specific applications for our population. Terminology, access, positioning, safety, and adjunctive components will be reviewed.
The training is geared towards service providers, family members, and others who might be assisting the individuals DDS provides services for in using an iPad.
Each participant will have access to a shared iPad loaded with apps that will be demonstrated during the training. Since using the machine and becoming familiar with it is such an integral of the training, it will be limited to 8 participants in each session.

The training emphasizes prevention, preparedness and response. Continue on North Beacon to Watertown Square. Go straight through the lights at the large intersection and on to Main Street (past CVS, Watertown Library, and Fire Station on your right). Go approximately 1.6 miles on Main Street to the Watertown/Waltham line.
Turn right onto Warren St. at the lights just over the Waltham line (Walgreen’s and John Brewer’s Tavern are on your right).
Go 0.5 miles on Warren St. Turn left onto Beaver Street – look for a small traffic island on the left, just when the road curves to the right.
Cross the railroad tracks and a very small bridge, then take First Right into the parking lot at 135 Beaver Street. Directly ahead on the right is a dumpster beside the tree line.
The entrance to WCI is across from the dumpster and has a blue canopy over the door.
FROM ROUTE 128: Take Trapelo Road exit traveling East toward Waltham and Belmont. The first major intersection will be at Lexington Street; continue through the lights staying on Trapelo Road.
After approx. 5 miles you will pass the Fernald Center on your right. At the next set of lights, turn Right onto Waverly Oaks Road. Go approx. 0.5 miles to the next set of lights and turn left onto Beaver Street (Shell Gas Station will be on your left).
135 Beaver Street is the first brick building on your left. Enter the parking lot and go to the east end of the building. Look for the dumpster along the tree line. The entrance to WCI is directly across from the dumpster and has a blue canopy over the door.
